Comment Just Deal With It (Score 1) 664

Computers, cell phones and other network connected devices are a fact of life. They will be come more ubiquitous and more integrated into our lives than they are now. Academia needs to adapt and learn to deal with them not ban them. If students can't discipline themselves to pay attention in class despite the distraction, they deserve to fail. If instructors can't motivate their students to learn despite the distraction, they do not deserve to teach.

...the iPhone OS and OSX will merge (OS-XI) and the MacBook and the iPad form factors will merge. In the future all Macs will look like the iPad, they will all run Apple manufactured chips, and the only content and programs they will run will be from an Apple app store. Steve will then have realized his dream of being able to take a cut of everything that happens on an Apple device. And it will be a consumers choice to be alright about this or not. I'll probably be sort of alright with it on a (jailbroken) phone, but not on my main computing device.

Comment Installed Base (Score 5, Insightful) 421

The current internet installed base infrastructure that would need to be ripped out and replaced is so large that this kind of redesign will never happen. Change has to come in incremental steps, each with a significant, well identified payback. What's technically possible does not matter nearly as much as whether change will make or save money.

I have never pirated a book either electronically or with a copy machine. If authors wish to sell to me they had better have their books in electronic format. I suspect I am not alone.

And how about the ability to make permanent exceptions for sites with mismatching SSL certs so I don't get a warning message every time I access webmin on my linux server on my home network? Seriously, most of the time I'm on the web I'm in Gmail or on a forum. Spell check is not a luxury, its a necessity. Speed and Acid 3 compliance do not keep me using Firefox, spell check, and adblock do.
