Comment Re:Fixed summary for you (Score 1) 398

Imagine if someone were to tell a young person learning to drive that the only way to get to their destination was to turn right at every possible opportunity? (or left, depending on the source of instruction)

The idea would be rejected outright - the idea that not only is all problem solving binary, but that only one of the two is the correct answer to every conceivable problem, completely regardless of destination, and completely regardless of starting point. (student: But sir there is a cliff on the right. teacher: Trust me on this, turn right.)

And yet, we have people who otherwise are mentally functional fighting viciously for exactly this fantastic level of ignorance every day. That has taken a lot of intentional work and media.

In return for football, Nascar and Simpsons (or beads and hemp) we give them our life long vote.

However, he makes money telling Windows users they will be safe if they remember to pay him their fees. Not the same protection racket from the Linux crowd so I'm sure he's pleased to take any swipe he can.

Comment It's all about Surface (Score 1) 398

Microsoft is willingly taking a hit for a few years in the hope that Surface will take over the tablet space.

If that ever happens people may very well like a desktop that apes their tablet. (Huge win if they would also like a phone like that.) But the only major selling point for Surface is that it supports Microsoft Office. So now everything depends on how much people want a tablet with Office.

My guess, which is admittedly uninformed, is that Surface will gain some traction in the business world. Any prognosticators out their with better info for us?

Comment Re:Child abuse != Piracy (Score 1) 348

Child abuse and piracy are not comparable. Child abuse is human depravity pushed to such an extreme that is justifiable to use it as a reason to defy common sense. Piracy is simply deviation from the rule of law - it does not warrant ubiquitous censorship of the kind that is being proposed.

Agree.

"OK police, you were willing to work around the clock for three weeks to thwart that terrorist fire-bombing plot on the children's hospital, so you should be able to expend the same resources to thwart shop-lifting of $10 items from prosperous mega-stores."

Normal, healthy people are willing to expend considerably more effort and resources to prevent gross abuse of the innocent. You would have to be a person of great privilege to equate petty theft of the rich to such crimes.

They don't follow up on anything, I checked.

Nobody enjoys following up on things in which they have absolutely no interest.

Facebook have proven exceedingly reliable at not caring about their user's security or privacy.

Having living proof of a hack is especially annoying because it actually forces them to respond and improve user security. Fankly, I'm surprised they are pressing charges.

A browser should never crash, period. If it crashes then it is because the Mozilla devs wasted their time on some pet projects instead of using that time for QA and testing of the core browser.

Agreed.

Also, software should never have security vulnerabilities, should never lag and should never have unexpected behaviours of any kind.

The fact that Firefox is the only web browsing software which is less than absolutely perfect is very damning.

Not as dangerous as lecturers at public universities. I think I will write an app that allows you to geotag your local professors, track their license plates, and give you hints and tips on how to heckle them and ruin their lives for doing things that you may or may not agree with.

The difference is that criminals have no use for lecturers but they DO have a use for an app which tells them where they can steal firearms.

This app will do exactly what every other "outing" of firearm owners has done - it will INCREASE the number of weapons held by dangerous criminals and directly ASSIST violent crime.

I'm all for increasing the public safety. And personally I believe updated gun ownership laws should be part of that equation. But regarding the public safety, these outings are such a massive fail THEY should be illegal.
