And how would the price come down? The price of a car or house is made up of the cost of parts and the cost of labor, which of those two would go down so the house or car would cost less? Like computers there is not a lot of overhead/wiggle room in those markets. How many house builders do you know that make multi millions? Most of the ones I know struggle to make ends meet just like I do. If there was a big markup in housing those builders would be sitting on piles of cash.

Comment I found phone message sex when I started my job (Score 1) 547

When I first started my current job (7 years ago) I was setting up the voice mail and noticed that there were already messages in the voice mail. Out of curiosity I listed to them thinking that if they were important I could forward them to someone who could help. What I found was astounding. It was a womans voice and the message she left was very explicit. I went and asked the IT department who had owned that voicemail before I started and it was some guy that quite a few years before. Anyways I deleted the messages, but I still remember that it was funny.

I agree with previous posters that you really need to keep your personal stuff on personal computers, I remote desktop into my home computer to do personal stuff (buying things, facebook, ebay, etc) so that my work computer does not have a trail.

Actually you described using the quick launch feature. Pinning is a bit different. To pin something to the taskbar you right click it and choose "pin to taskbar" This is not the same as using quick launch because it does not create a new icon on the taskbar when the program starts. This reduces the number of icons using up space since you will only have one (with quick launch you have two or more, one for quick launch, and then another for each running instance of the program)

My price point for game is $10, and this is only for full games on disk. For download games I won't pay more than $5. I mostly buy games used (GameFly is great), but every once in a while I will run across a great sale, or something and I can pick up a new game for $10 or less. For example, just a couple weeks ago I bought Batman Arkham city ($10), Rage($5), and BulletStorm($5) new for $20 total at Best buy. I always wait for the Xbox live games to go one sale before I purchase them. If the console makers force out used game sales I will either not buy a new console, or I will wait a couple years until there are enough old games that have come down in price to keep me busy.

I have been using page plus and it is great. They use the Verizon Towers, so coverage is great. You get to bring your own phone, I am using the Droid Incredible, and it is prepaid, so no contract, overages, or other hassles. And best of all it is dang cheap. I get 1200 minutes, 3000 texts, and 100mb of data for $29.95 a month.

Here is a blog of my experience setting it up. http://www.justechn.com/2010/06/15/how-i-got-a-droid-incredible-on-the-verizon-network-without-having-to-pay-a-data-fee

I even switched my wife to it last week when her Verizon contract ended. She went from paying $45 a month for 0 data, 0 texts, and 450 minutes, to the same plan as me. She is loving it.

What Does a $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? 495

justechn writes "Tom's Hardware has an article about custom PC maker Puget Systems, who had just finished a custom $16,000 PC for one of their clients. So what exactly goes into a $16,000 system? How about: Four quad-core Opteron processors, 32 GB of memory, Windows Server 2008, Asus Xonar DX PCI Express sound card, 3Ware 9550SX-8LP SATA 3 Gb/s RAID controller, Two Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor hard drives in RAID 1, Two 1 TB Samsung SpinPoint F1s also in RAID 1, and Four 1 TB Samsung SpinPoint F1s in RAID 5. Puget went with MagiCool's Xtreme Nova 1080 radiator, Nine 120 mm fans, Four Koolance CPU blocks, Koolance combined pump and reservoir unit, and Cooler Master Stacker 810 case. In addition to all that hardware, it also runs very quiet and very cool. The temperature of the CPUs is 36 C at idle, 45 C at load."

New Take on Self-Healing Polymer Could Mean Scratch-Free Screens 67

techprophet writes to mention that a new take on self-healing plastic could provide a long-term solution to scratched screens. The new polymer, developed by scientists at the University of Southern Mississippi, uses UV light to reform bonds between molecules rather than embedded healing agents of similar systems. "At the core of their design is polyurethane, which is an elastic polymer that already has decent scratch resistance. To enhance its ability to withstand mechanical damage, Ghosh and Urban added two more components, OXE and CHI. OXE has an unstable chemical structure (a four-membered ring containing three carbons and one oxygen) that makes it prone to being split open. CHI is UV sensitive. The idea is that, if the polyurethane gets damaged by a scratch, the unstable ring structure of OXE will open to create two reactive ends. Then, UV light can trigger CHI to form new links with the reactive ends of OXE and thereby fix the break in the polymer."

Libel Suits OK Even If Libel Is Truthful 301

Defeat Globalism writes to tell us that many journalists, bloggers, and media law specialists are concerned about a new ruling by a US Court of Appeals in Boston. The new ruling is allowing a former Staples employee to sue the company for libel after an email was sent out informing other employees that he had been fired for violations of company procedures regarding expense reimbursements. "Staples has asked the full appeals court to reconsider the ruling, and 51 news organizations have filed a friend-of-the-court brief saying that the decision, if allowed to stand, 'will create a precedent that hinders the media's ability to rely on truthful publication to avoid defamation liability.' But Wendy Sibbison, the Greenfield appellate lawyer for the fired Staples employee, Alan S. Noonan, said the ruling applies only to lawsuits by private figures against private defendants, that is, defendants not involved in the news business, over purely private matters."
