Was the boldfaced "standard" not clear enough?
Why should I have to throw away the perfectly good displays that I already have?

It seems like a massive missed opportunity to me, but I'm not optimized for media consumption.
I want the 1680x1050 screen that my ThinkPad T60 had 5 frippin' years ago (along with the connections types -- 2 external displays -- that one can't get with Apple products).
A 16x9 "optimized for media consumption" display is ridiculous in a work laptop.
I purchased two of these a few months ago (replacing a couple of 1680x1050 Acer displays), and I couldn't be happier.
It's something that you get to reduce the price of your Internet access in most of the U.S. (The "bundles" offered by the telcos and cable TV providers here are almost always less expensive that Internet service by itself.)
Remember that none of this stuff will work if you have even the faintest hint of security on your home network.
Don't even think about putting your spiffy new never-patched, Internet accessing, firewall-less "smart" devices on a separate subnet from your WiFi if you want to actually use these features.
How dare you insult my Jesus crackers like that.
Mmmmmm
Nope. It's "fscked".
Paypal cancelled my account, because I wouldn't give them direct (i.e. ACH) access to my checking account. I don't think they do that any more, but my d'bag meter tends to stick once it gets in the red.
All of which is my way of saying that I'm not one bit surprised by this move.
Laptops seems to be moving in the "media consumption" direction, becoming less and less useful for actual work all the time.
Try to find a laptop with a 16x10 display. I get that 16x9 panels are less expensive, but it blows my mind that no one makes a "premium" business laptop with a 16x10 display. (I specifically exclude Apple from the business category here, due to the lack of things like docking stations, dual external display support, etc.)
It's incredibly frustrating for those of us who need to do real work while travelling.
