While I loved and largely agreed with your post, I think you made a mistake with the final sentence:

Have you read Stranger in a Strange Land? It's like an anti-Musk manifesto. The closest character to Musk in it is either the religious figures or Jubal Harshaw. From the outside, Harshaw might look like Musk (as a rich playboy type) ... but again, if you actually read the book, Harshaw is the opposite of Musk in every way that matters.

At the book's end Harshaw joins Mike's (essentially) communist Martian cult as a member of the elite inner circle: Musk wouldn't even have been let in at the cult's lowest level.

Look, Google *does* prevent fraudulent clicks, in the sense of "someone programmed a robot to click an ad many times, and Google caught that robot doing it".

However, it does not cover some random person clicking on a link and then leaving the site: Google has no mechanism by which I can identify that click as "fraudulent" ... because it isn't.

Google might not have a crystal ball, but they *should* have had a strategic plan.

The only strategic plan they've had, for years now, has been "throw a bunch of darts at a wall; if none of them stick (ie. become hugely successful in the first six months) rip everything out, and throw a new set of darts.

With a "strategic" plan like that, it's no wonder their hiring plan was similarly flawed.

Well, Reddit is certainly inconsistent in how they discipline both their regular users and their moderators; I won't dispute that.

But my point remains: faulting the mods of a leak subreddit (for banning a leak thwarter) is like faulting the /r/diet moderators when they kick someone out for posting cupcake pictures.

Rent for an apartment like that in Mountain View is maybe $2500/month now? Could even be a few hundred cheaper if you're lucky, eg. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/p... is "only" $2,295 for a 1 bedroom.

So while the two are close, an apartment is still cheaper (vs. about $3000/month for the hotel).

Comment Reader and iGoogle (Score 1) 150

Like others have said, Reader was a true loss. But equally high on my list was "iGoogle" (ie. a Google-powered home page). It had widgets for everything I wanted, it was easily configurable ... basically it was the perfect home page.

www.ighome.com has tried to recreate it, but the quality of engineering is seriously lacking. Many of the widgets don't work, and if you leave it open in a tab for too long the memory leaks in it start chewing up all your RAM (Google's version never did that).
