Submission + - Lightweight display

An anonymous reader writes: With the proliferation of wireless home networking devices, is there any effort underway to develop a lightweight display device without processing capabilities or HDDs? I can establish a home wireless connection of my DSL, I could purchase Slingbox or something similar to distribute video, but what I'd like is a feather-weight monitor that could receive signals from my box or DVD player and allow me to recline on the sofa and read /. ,watch a movie, read an online book etc. Even the lighest sub-notebook fails to be a workable solution, and the MP3/phone device displays are too small.

Submission + - Sony BMG, UMG & Co. Try Evil New Legal Tactic

The MAFIAA writes: "After quickly withdrawing their lawsuit against Mr. Merchant after the strongly-worded letter from his lawyer, the RIAA found an evil new way to legally invade Mr. Merchant's computer. They moved the case over to federal court and filed a John Doe lawsuit with an ex parte request for immediate discovery. In plain English, that means that the RIAA asked the court to let them root through Mr. Merchant's computer for no reason and they used legal tricks to deny him the opportunity to object. Mr. Merchant's lawyer is not happy, and has accused them of violating court rules."

Submission + - Lenovo disables virtualization on consumer laptops

Anders1 writes: "Last month, I bought a new Lenovo 3000 N100 notebook with a Core 2 Duo processor, which is supposed to support Intel Virtualization Technology. It turns out, however, that my notebook's BIOS unconditionally disables VT extensions, and even goes so far as to set the lock bit of the feature-control MSR such that it is impossible to re-enable them. Lenovo support has been unresponsive. Are they too clueless to flip a single bit in the BIOS, or are they selling intentionally crippled products?"

Submission + - Why it's hard to do non-graphics coding on a GPU

Boursin writes: NVIDIA's CUDA and ATI's CTM are both intended to let coders use GPU hardware for non-graphics-related tasks. This article talks about why these are even harder to program than another new architecture that also tries to bridge the gap between graphics-specific and general-purpose computation: IBM's Cell. In short, don't expect to see these GPUs catch on in anything other than normal graphics cards outside of the high-performance computing niche.

Submission + - Delete Blacklisted Cookies

MacMags writes: "The Mac OS X anti-spyware program MacScan adds a new feature in 2.3 allowing users to delete blacklisted cookies. Rather than trashing all the cookies in the browser MacScan uses a blacklist of known tracking cookies to allow the users to selectively delete. The blacklist is updated just as the spyware list is. Users are encouraged to submit any known tracking cookies for all types of sites including adult for review and possible inclusion."
