Journal Journal: Extracting to temp and copying? 10

Not submitting this one to the queue or anything, but why in hell is it that practically every archiver on Windows extracts to the temp folder and then copies the file to the target destination? This approach makes certain archives unusable. For example, let's say you have an archive with two archives inside it and need to extract a file from one of them; you have enough room for the archive, one of the archives inside the archive, and one file inside THAT, but you can't get it out beca

Every kitchen has at some time or another been home to a sponge, that oh-so-versatile cleaning tool. It wipes up messes on countertops and absorbs liquid droplets quickly. Best of all, it's reusable. Now researchers can tell you two easy ways to keep it clean.

Submission + - Jack Thompsons Blames Microsoft for VT Shooting

strwrsxprt writes: Jack Thompson is leeching off of the coverage of the latest school shooting tragedy at Virgina Tech, once again blaming violent videogames for all of America's problems. His latest directed attack is against Microsoft with an open letter addressed to Bill Gates. Game Almighty has obtained a copy of the letter, but here's a quick sample:
"Mr. Gates, your company is potentially legally liable the harm done at Virginia Tech. Your game, a killing simulator, according to the news that used to be in the Post, trained him to enjoy killing and how to kill. You knew five years ago that your on-line game, Counterstrike, so clearly figured in the massacre by a student in Erfurt that the event and the game impacted the race for Chancellor in Germany at the time!"

Submission + - 5 Years for a movie?

Thrawn01 writes: "A good friend of mine has just been convicted of seeding Star Wars episode III and is facing up to 5 years of jail time

I do not condone his actions and agree he should be punished but 5 Years in a federal prison for sharing a 35$ movie with no personal financial gain? Drug dealers that "SELL" drugs get 5 years in prison. So I ask the slashdot community. Why should my friend who has no financial gain from sharing the copyrighted material suffer the same sentence as a drug dealer? Why such a high price for giving away a movie? What is a reasonable penalty for seeding copyrighted material? How can I help my friend and get this law changed?

Thanks."

EnderGT writes: "Scientists hope to mimic the magnetic field which protects the Earth to protect astronauts from radiation. They argue that magnetic shields could be deployed around spacecraft and on the surfaces of planets to deflect harmful energised particles."

Submission + - Libido Reduction Methods and Techniques?

An anonymous reader writes: Underutilized libido is a big problem for many attached males, especially those on slashdot. Women no longer need men to gather and hunt and have evolved away from the need to satisfy their partners. To cope, I now run 6 miles per day, took up the guitar, and added a part-time job... I get to sleep faster, but it doesn't take the edge off while I'm awake, and nobody wants to waste hour after hour on traditional methods. I'd seriously considering faking depression just to get antidepressants for the promise of a significantly reduced drive. Has anybody had luck finding ways to kill off this incessant biological drive that provides no benefit for the oppressed modern man?

Submission + - Why are websites still forcing people to use IE?

DragonTHC writes: "I just visited movielink's website for research. Their site has a nice message saying, "Sorry, but in order to enjoy the Movielink service you must use Internet Explorer 5.0 (or higher) or Mozilla/Firefox with an IE Tab Extension (IE installation required)." While allowing the IETab firefox extension is somewhat progressive, why do companies still force people to use Internet Explorer? Surely the site should work just fine in Firefox? With steady gains in market share by firefox, you would think that webmasters would get the hint. How about any /. users who are webmasters, what are your reasons for forcing IE?"

Submission + - MS releases Media Player Firefox plugin

SilentChris writes: Microsoft today released a new Media Player plugin for Firefox. According to MS's Port 25 blog it's backwards compatible to Windows Media Player 6.4. The plugins are Windows XP and Vista only, but if you have to watch WMV video (CNN.com anyone?) at least it's less likely to crash your browser.

Submission + - Gamers perform better on surgical skill test

Blindside writes: Are surgeons who are also gamers at an advantage in the operating room? A new study showed that gamers had a distinct advantage in a surgical skills test. 'Neither years of training nor number of surgeries performed would predict performance on the laparoscopy skills test. Past gaming and current skills, in contrast, would. Those who had never gamed took significantly longer to complete the skills test, and had an error rate of roughly 1.5 times that of regular gamers. Similar correlations also held when gaming skills were tested: those scoring in the top third made nearly 50 percent fewer errors, and and performed the drill nearly 40 percent faster. For those keeping score at home, Super Monkey Ball 2 had the best correlation with surgical skills, Star Wars Racer Revenge the worst.'
