Submission + - Survey finds that Windows Server 2008 will flop (networkworld.com)

Julie188 writes: "Windows Server 2008 is already shaping up to be just as big a flop in the enterprise as Windows Vista. In a survey of 687 IT professionals conducted by Network World, 50% have no plans whatsoever to upgrade. Of the remaining half, only 12% plan to upgrade within 12 months of the product's release. The biggest complaint, named by 68%, is that it breaks existing apps. 65% also say an upgrade will be too expensive. 43% say that they are worried about the OS's security and 34% simply feel that Windows Server 2008 offers no compelling new technology. For those that do want it, Microsoft's NAC, (dubbed Network Access Protection) is the top draw, named by 44%. 37% will upgrade because it will be time to buy a new server anyway. 32% will want it because they like to have the newest technology. 24% want Microsoft's upgraded Web server, IIS 7.0, included with Windows Server 2008. (Note, multiple answers allowed.) But the general belief, some three months away from its much ballyhooed launch, is that Windows Server 2008 simply won't be worth the hassle."

Submission + - Non-fraternization vs. your rights 1

An anonymous reader writes: I have been placed on suspension pending investigation regarding violation of my employer's "no fraternization" policy. During the past 3 days of interrogations I have had many prying, personal questions asked, including whether or not I had sexual relations with another employee who works in the same facility but not on my shift (we are never in the building at the same time). We are considered lower level management of the same level, so union support is out, and have no authority or interaction with one another in the course of business. I have not responded to the allegations and stated that certain things are none of their business and that I am awaiting counsel (which I am).

No proof of any wrongdoing was given, and the source of the allegations is not being revealed.

It is my feeling that my personal life and who I associate with off the clock is my own business as long as it has no effect on my job performance. I am awaiting legal counsel, but I have been told by the company that there is a strong possibility I will not have a job within the next few days, if not sooner.

What are my rights in this situation, can an employer question you about your private life in this manner, and am I obligated to answer?

Submission + - Why Did Laptop Screens Become Mirrors?

Strudelkugel writes: I decided to get a new laptop. I haven't looked new models for some time, but a friend was showing me his new one with many desirable features: Faster CPU, more RAM, faster disk, less weight. Just one problem: the LCD is the new "glossy" variety, which reflected the ceiling lights, the desk lamp, the wallpaper, etc. — essentially everything you would expect to see in a mirror. Obviously this degraded the display of the PC desktop. I thought it was a very annoying "feature", but I could always find a model with a decent anti-glare screen. Imagine my surprise when I went to the store and found every new model on display had glossy mirror screen! The people in the store said the new screens are supposed to offer a better image, but all agreed the reflectivity was something they didn't like. Where is the marketing PHB who foisted this idea upon the unsuspecting public? Is the glossy screen a wayward attempt to make laptops look more like shiny new toasters — something more oriented oriented to the general consumer?

Submission + - Does SPF really work?

Intelopment writes: "My Domain name has recently been used a lot as the REPLY field by some inconsiderate spammer and my ISP has suggested that I consider using the Open SPF service (http://openspf.org/) as a way to stop spammers from using my domain name for their REPLY field. From what I can tell it requires the receiving mail server to actually participate in the SPF service, which is where I get my doubts. Does anyone have any experience with this service? Does it work? Are many ISPs using openSFP?"

Submission + - Google Won't Index JavaScript: How To SEO Web 2.0

gbulmash writes: "Google doesn't index JavaScript-generated content, as I found out with an experiment I did in March. Seven weeks later, the page still does not come up in a Google search for the nonsense words inserted via JavaScript. So, if you're trying to attract search-driven traffic to your Web 2.0 site, how do you keep your cool JavaScript features while getting the spiders to index all that rich keywordy goodness in the content your JavaScript is hiding? Simple. Offer the search engines an alternative."

Submission + - A pill that makes women slimmer and hornier

The Great Pretender writes: The BBC reports that scientists are developing a pill which could boost women's libido and reduce their appetite. The hormone-releasing pill has so far only been given to female monkeys and shrews who displayed more mating behavior and ate less. The team from the Medical Research Council's Human Reproduction Unit in Edinburgh believe a human version could be available within a decade. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6606927.stm. I was married to a shrew once...

Submission + - Huge Data Center Spending in Northern Virginia

miller60 writes: "Surging demand for data centers in northern Virginia is prompting huge investment in the region. On Tuesday Equinix announced that it will spend $70 million to build a brand new facility in Ashburn, just weeks after opening a newly-built $55 million data center on the same campus. On Thursday Digital Realty Trust bought three data center properties in Loudoun County for $62 million. In recent weeks, Terremark and a start-up called Criticon have also announced Virginia data center projects that each total $100 million or more. The deals show that while the largest data centers are chasing cheap hydro power in the Northwest, demand for enterprise facilities is prompting huge investments in traditional data center markets like northern Virginia, Silicon Valley and northern New Jersey."

Submission + - De Icaza Pleads for Cooperation Between Mono, .Net

suka writes: "In a recent interview with the online edition of the Austrian daily Newspaper "DER STANDARD", Mono project-lead Miguel de Icaza pleads for a cooperation between Mono and Microsofts .Net: 'I think that the deal should include a technical Mono/.NET collaboration, and even go as far as Microsoft recommending Mono for all of their developers looking at migration'. The whole interview has some other interesting bits, like de Icazas thoughts on an open sourced java and infos about upcomping versions of Mono."

Submission + - Breastfeeding Censorship on Myspace

rogue0208 writes: "http://www.petitiononline.com/Brstfeed/petition.ht ml

MySpace allows pictures of scantily clad women across its site. MySpace also allows images of children in barely there clothes to grace its pages. However, they've been deleting images of women breastfeeding their children. Why? Because they consider it be indecent. Breastfeeding is allowed by law in any public place that a woman is allowed to be in. If every state allows a woman to breastfeed in public without a law being broken, then why does Myspace have an issue with it? Please sign the petition to let MySpace know that what they are doing is censorship."

Submission + - Dow Jones Plunge Fueled by Overwhelmed Computers

cloudscout writes: "The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped over 400 points today. While there were various valid financial reasons for such a decline, some of the blame is being placed on computer systems that couldn't keep up with the abnormally high volume at the New York Stock Exchange and the resulting tremor as they switched over to a backup system. In other words, Dow Jones got Slashdotted."
