Girl Seeks Help On Facebook During Assault Screenshot-sm 417

A 12-year-old girl who was being assaulted by her mother's ex-boyfriend used some quick thinking by sending a message on her iPod to a friend's Facebook account for help. The friend was able to contact the girl's mother who then contacted the police. 42-year-old Raymond Ernest Cesmat was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. He is being held at the Dakota County Jail on $175,000 bail.

JonathansCorner.com writes "Even if Ajax was backronymed to 'Asynchronous JavaScript and XML,' it works with JSON substituted for XML. Here's a proof of concept that JavaScript/VBScript are not strictly necessary either. The technique, besides being used standalone, may be useful to provide a better 'graceful degradation' for Ajax applications used by clients with scripting turned off."

I mentioned these because in all of them the manuals add to the gaming experience - SC2K's manual has amazing artwork, Homeworld's throws you into a complex historical complex and Infocom text adventures had "feelies" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feelie). It's not about teaching you the keys and so on - it's about purpose, about making the game more than a button-mashing, mouse-clicking race filled with pretty tesselated graphics. I still play SC2k, Homeworld (1, Cataclysm and 2) and the occasional Z-Machine story file.

Not good, at least for me. And if you take a look at the manual for Sim City 2000 or Homeworld or any Infocom text adventure, you'd realize manuals can be an integral part of the gaming experience. But hey, all players want these days are FPS', so why bother right? :|

He has already hinted at plans to write a book, and a new post suggests a tell-all tome could indeed be in the offing. 'I feel for Google — Steve Jobs threatened to sue me, too,' Schwartz writes, apparently referring to Apple's patent lawsuit against HTC, which makes Google's Nexus One smartphone. As for Bill Gates, Schwartz says he was threatening regarding Sun's efforts in the office software space."

'At Google we believe that open systems win. They lead to more innovation, value, and freedom of choice for consumers, and a vibrant, profitable, and competitive ecosystem for businesses. ... Our goal is to keep the Internet open, which promotes choice and competition and keeps users and developers from getting locked in.' But are we likely to see Google open their search engine, advertising or the famous back-end system? In their words, that would mean Google and other companies would need to work harder and innovate more to keep their users, for everyone's benefit."
