There is an easy solution. The company should only say they will support this version of software, then for the hardware have a test partition that runs through hardware tests.
Easy isn't it.

It is only when you involve government that there can be conflicts. It is only with government control that you can get into pointless 'rental' disputes about how you never actually owned the things you paid for.
I think you mean to use the word people instead of government. Otherwise you're just coming off as anti-government.
There is alot more strategy to Civ III then Farmville.

Oracle is counting on people getting confused about the issue and using some vague VM patents to get their way. The patents in question could apply to any virtual machine. Such as the
The reason for suing Google is Google is using the Java language but not the Java virtual machine. Since people see Java they are confusing the issue and thinking that Android is a Java vm when it's not. Oracle doesn't like that Google is getting the Java language for free and wants a piece of the action.
There are filters on the market to make applications only show up on certain harder it's compatible with.

I am on a netbook so I am back on linux. (didn't come with a windows cd)
A worm can move through a pdf file quick.

This hack could be done to any usb keyboard.
A firmware flashing utility that refused to flash if the firmware image isn't from the manufactor would be annoying. There are usefull firmwares that are hacked. Dvd firmware that removes regions comes to mind.
While a bios is a firmware. A firmware is not a bios.
This hack also requires physical access, which means there are other ways to compromise the system.
