Take your used motor oil and batteries (I'm assuming you're speaking of the automotive type) to your local auto-parts store. They will accept both (and, in the case of batteries, quote you a price for the new battery that includes you returning the old one). Oil collections are free, not sure about batteries, though I suspect it'd be free since they'd make cash selling back the lead.

Let's see, in the past year I've had... 2 dead CFLs (1 year old), four dead LED bulbs (flickering, globe failures, etc). Don't try to tell me my TCO is a win. No doubt you'll assert I'm "holding it wrong" or some other retarded result of your confirmation bias.

I'm curious as to what type of fixture you had these these were installed. It's unfortunately not common-knowledge enough, but they aren't meant for enclosed fixtures (and the boxes / packaging *does* state this). I didn't know this until my bathroom fixture kept killing CFL's, and then an LED. I finally read the package of the LED and noticed the "no enclosed fixtures" warning.

In my case, I swapped out the fixture for one that looked nearly the same, but was open at the top (the glass shade hung down about an inch, or so, from its base) and haven't had an issue since.

The condescending My Docs, My Music, et al should also go.

WHY?! This actually teaches / encourages people to store their documents / pictures / music in *one spot*, which makes things much more simple to back up. Granted, not every user actually uses these folders for their intended purposes (I recall backing up a ~120GB "My Documents" folder becuase the user threw *all* files, picutres / music / videos / documents into it, with *no* sub-folders to sort everything, for example)...

At least with MS you get a company that understands the need for an update infrastructure.

At least until MS decides to EOL a product, like they did with XP. Granted, the length of time MS provides support for a product is *far* longer than Google provides for Android, but *both* companies are quite up front about said time period.

I actually quite like Hangouts. I can dial from it (using my GV number). I can send texts or Hangouts messages to my contacts (both, in the case I have a contact in my list, and have their GMail address), which is awesome because I'm sometimes in a cell-dead-zone, but have WiFi available, and in that case can still send MMS's. Any SMS / Hangouts messages I send are all in one spot, and if I want to toggle between SMS / Hangouts, there's a little button in the lower-left corner of the input box for just that purpose.

Really, I don't understand the hate Hangouts keeps receiving...

The solution for TWC is to buy Internet through a reseller. When they increased my Internet cost from ~$45/month to ~$70/month because I dropped the TV service, I switched to Earthlink and paid ~$42/month. No change in service, same equipment, no cutover, etc. Just a bill from a different source. This was a few years back, but I just spoke to a co-worker who's doing the same thing now, so it should still be an option.

You are probably in a different Verizon region because costs are significantly lower in Manhattan for the services you're describing - even without the 2 year contract they try to push on people.

That option isn't available everywhere. For example, in my neck of the woods, they can offer me 56k dialup @ $21.95 a month(!!!), or $12.50 monthly if I pay a full year in advance, or "up to 5.0Mbps" satellite at $60 a month (or higher, depending on the plan)...

There exists some people who need to know what Bill O'Rielly is talking about each night. Those people can't tolerate Dish's occasional dropping of networks. DirecTV gets most of its deals done without disruption, but therefore has to increase prices more often.

Those people can watch The Daily Show...
