How To Find Bad Programmers 359

AmberShah writes "The job post is your potential programmer's first impression of your company, so make it count with these offputting features. There are plenty of articles about recruiting great developers, but what if you are only interested in the crappy ones?" I think much of the industry is already following these guidelines.

Geomagnetic Storm In Progress 110

shogun writes "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports a strong geomagnetic storm is in progress. The shuttle, ISS and GPS systems may be affected." They think this storm was caused by a weak solar flare on April 3rd. As you may expect, this has caused some unusually impressive northern lights since it started. What you may not expect is a photograph from Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi aboard the International Space Station showing the aurora from orbit. He apparently tweets a lot of pictures from space. He and his crewmates have taken over 100,000 pictures since coming aboard the ISS.

Having read Slashdot for years I knew what I was getting in for in the way of comments and harbour no ill feelings. After all it is Slashdot. But I also don't think it shows my brother any disrespect by posting the story. As a fellow geek I'm sure he would have been thrilled to be mentioned. And he was as much a wise-a** as anyone else posting here.

Comment Re:Do we need the anti-smoking jab (Score 1) 479

I figured that most of the people reading this haven't had the chance to watch someone die of smoking related cancer. While it's painful enough to watch someone slowly die over 9 months nothing compares to the final few weeks. By then it's into the bones and they can't give you enough pain killers. Then it's just days and days of non-stop pain and discomfort while you wait for death. It's worse than you can ever imagine.

Submission + - Geek Funeral 1

Sam_In_The_Hills writes: "I've not seen this topic covered here before even though it's one that will concern us all at some time. What to do with our corporeal remains after we've left for that great data bank in the sky. For my recently departed brother (long illness, DON'T SMOKE!!!) I thought this nice SPARCstation would be a cool place to spend eternity. Yes he's really in there (after cremation). I kept the floppy drive cover but for space reasons removed the floppy drive, hard drive and most of the power supply. I left behind the motherboard and power switch and plugs to keep all openings covered. The case worked quite well at his memorial party. His friends and family were able to leave their final good-byes with post-notes. Anyone who wanted to keep their words private could just slip them into the case through the floppy slot. All notes will be sealed in plastic and placed within the case. There has been one complication. His daughters like the look of it so much they aren't now sure if they want to bury him.
This is also a new take on the old joke, "What's a Geek Urn?" One more thing. The words on the plaque is really was one of the last things he ever said. Of course as kids we watched the original in it's first run."

Comment We prefer to be called "Chromatically Challenged" (Score 1) 197

One day my chromatically challenged brothers and I will rise up and take control. Then the changes will begin. Let's see how you "It's not light blue, it's teal" people handle traffic lights with three lens but only two colors, one of which is white so it matches the street lights at night. Emergency vehicles that might actually only be tow trucks and smarmy calls from the network engineer "The color of the led will change on the ethernet card if it's working". Maybe for you rainbow head but not for me. Once we're in charge there will be be other changes like no more colorized movies. Hell we just might black and whiterize them all just for spite. Just you wait. On that proud day we will hoist our many banners and just like always we will hear you say, as you always say, "You know that doesn't match your socks, right?"

Submission + - DMCA take down advice

CBung writes: Hello Slashdot readers, I am involved in an open source Java strategy game engine hosted on SourceForge. We have existed for many years and our development is volunteer based. We use the engine to play clones of a popular WWII board game as well as many community created mods and maps. The popularity of the board game is the driving force behind the successfulness of our application. Most users have "been playing that board game for 20yrs", and most of us own at least one of the board games. We love being able to play on line and develop our skills on the board game maps at an international level. Unfortunately, we've recently been hit by a DMCA take down notice from the rights holder the board game that we clone. The IP holder did create a PC version of the board game in 1998 which was poorly maintained and another reason our application was created. At this point, our initial reaction is to simply remove the specifically cloned maps, and maintain our application with many of our user mods. However, many of our mods use the same units and game mechanics/rules as the board game. Is there any way we can keep our application, including the clones of the board game maps, alive?

I will also note that the rights holder recently released an on line version of their board game thats playable on line. However it is very specific and limited in options. It seems more then coincidental that we've received this notice now that their own game lobby is on line. Can our application take refuge in another country? Is there a way to keep our application alive since it is significantly more feature full?
