International Space Station Infected With Malware Carried By Russian Astronauts 226

DavidGilbert99 writes "Nowhere is safe. Even in the cold expanse of space, computer malware manages to find a way. According to Russian security expert Eugene Kaspersky, the SCADA systems on board the International Space Station have been infected by malware which was carried into space on USB sticks by Russian astronauts."

New High Tech $100 Bills Start To Circulate Today 302

Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes "New $100 bills made their debut today in the U.S. They include high tech features designed to make it easier for the public to authenticate but more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate. Those measures include a blue, 3-D security ribbon, as well as color-shifting ink that changes from copper to green when the note is tilted (PDF). That ink can be found on a large '100' on the back of the bill, on one of the '100's' on the front, and on a new image of an ink well that's also on the front. 'The $100 is the highest value denomination that we issue, and it circulates broadly around the world,' says Michael Lambert, assistant director for cash at the Federal Reserve Board. 'Therefore, we took the necessary time to develop advanced security features that are easy for the public to use in everyday transactions, but difficult for counterfeiters to replicate.' The bill was originally due to reach banks in 2011, but three years ago the Federal Reserve announced that a problem with the currency's new security measures was causing the bills to crease during printing, which left blank spaces on the bills. This led the Feds to shred more than 30 million of the bills in 2012. The image of Benjamin Franklin will be the same as on the current bill, but like all the other newly designed currencies, it will no longer be surrounded by an dark oval. Except for the $1 and $2 bill, all U.S. paper currency has been redesigned in the last 10 years to combat counterfeiting."

We need precious metals.

Yes. So as to avoid cruel and unusual punishment at a constitutional level, prisons have to provide adequate health care. Hell, it's worth it, you can get free chemo therapy, heart surgery, etc. Just recently, a judge struck down a law in Wisconsin that prohibited hormone therapy for inmates because it was unconstitutional.

In case you haven't noticed by now... differential equations is where math meets the real world.

It is how we can translate a natural phenomenon into a math equation to figure out problems.

Being able to look at problems and be able to translate that into an equation into which the problem can then be solved is a vital in engineering.

I suggest you take Linear Algebra, too.

Crowdsourcing Failed In Boston Bombing Aftermath 270

Nerval's Lobster writes "With emotions high in the hours and days following the Boston Marathon bombing, hundreds of people took to Reddit's user-generated forums to pick over images from the crime scene. Could a crowd of sharp-eyed citizens uncover evidence of the perpetrators? No, but they could definitely focus attention on the wrong people. 'Though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on reddit fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties,' read an April 22 posting on Reddit's official blog. 'The reddit staff and the millions of people on reddit around the world deeply regret that this happened.'"

As well as the Santa Fe and Elantra. Actually, it was Elantra's and Santa Fe's advertised 40mpg sticker that really got Hyundai in trouble. Those were heavy cars and very little of them got close to the advertised MPG.

Accents on the other hand, are not that far off. While officially they do get 37mpg (I drive one that gets this), there are a lot of Accents (more than Elantras) that do get the stated 40mpg.

There are rumors that Hyundai wants to stop the "lifetime" debit card and instead give out a one-time cash payout to each original owner that still owns the car.

I drive a lot and a single pay-out is not worth it and even though I like my car, if Hyundai does stop the debit card program, I might consider trading my car in for another one because I, as well as many others, bought these cars for their MPGs.
