I believe China is not so stupid to believe that Oil will always be there, otherwise they would not be the world leader in installed renewable energy. On the other hand, communist heads of government in the country really need to deal with the corruption, but the build it faster will always come at reduced quality where humans are the builders. Quality work needs time, but the other problem is that as Oil costs go up so does the costs to build these green transport systems.

Reducing dependence on oil and using it only for advanced purposes would stretch it for a very long time. I think about a third goes into people's gas tanks, while the rest goes into advanced petrol products such as plastics and generic purposes such as fertilizer.

As a race it's annoying that a very vocal minority is derided by a majority that just refuses to believe we will ever run out. Within a hundred years we will be faced with three challenges. Fusion power to power our cities, combating global warming induced by our drive to have what we have today and expand it, and a large decrease in oil to provide the building blocks of advanced materials. Solving the energy equation should be a global priority, Fusion and renewables will provide what we need to fix the other two problems. If we fail in this, we may regress back a few hundred years, after several bloody wars that might just wipe us out anyways because I know damn well that majority will refuse at all costs go give up what they will lose if they fail to fix those 3 problems. And they'll probably take the human race with them.

Submission + - Ozone Hole Appears Over Arctic (ibtimes.com)

RedEaredSlider writes: A European Space Agency satellite has measured record low levels of ozone over the Arctic, creating a situation similar to the "ozone hole" over the Antarctic.

The Envisat satellite measures trace gases in the atmosphere as well as temperature of the sea surface. What it found was that in March of this year the levels of ozone over the Arctic, especially over the area between northwestern Russia and Greenland, were much lower than they were the previous year. Ozone levels were down in 1997, which was also an exceptionally cold winter. But the levels measured in 2011 were a record, according to the ESA.

All we hear is more of the same day in and day out. They're doing this, oh and we discovered that. They're now leaking cesium 141 into the ocean which has a half life of 30 years vs 8 days with the iodine. And ocean water flows clockwise towards the US and our fishing waters. After transocean were going to find we have very little seafood that's not contaminated because of human activity.

The government needs to get their power company out of the picture and work on real solutions, that power company is doing everything it can but at a slowness to save it's own ass.

I agree with you, but there is still upward mobility. I came from a poor family, spent 5 years in the military working on network gear, and now make 6 figures as a network engineer and I still dont have a college degree. While I do not have a business card that says I'm CEO Bitch, I did bring myself out of the small pissant town I grew up in oklahoma and live outside denver with a great view of the mountains.

Though on the flip side, I do not have it as good as in other foreign countries where my masters degree is paid for by the government, and I can get a job for a song anywhere in the US vs I had to pull myself up and get to where I am today.

Once Google states no DRM in WebM, Microsoft will win the battle and get hollywood on their side by offering DRM in whatever they cook up. That's the only reason they're asking this question. Without DRM there is no Netflix in HTLM 5 and for that matter any number of video options that may exist because the xxIA's require it.
