Submission + - So what actually is the best full privacy setup right now?

An anonymous reader writes: So after all these stories of snooping in the last weeks and the fact, that i found out, that people at my local isp are actually selling the surfing habits of customers, what is the current way to go full privacy for a pc and a smartphone? Read about signing up to a vpn service — ok. Read about owncloud — ok. Using duckduckgo now — ok. But where does one start? There are many questions: which linux distribution would be best, which vpn provider? create your own domain? what about the whois entry? How does one go about anonymous payments? Is it alright to use stock android or are there specific roms? Is the router from the isp a weak link? What would the costs amount to? Currently i am running chrome (generally an all google/ms setup), which, as it turns out, is not the best choice. What would be the best alternative? Is someone here actually running such a setup?

Submission + - Nokia continues to cut developer services (nokia.com) 4

jbernardo writes: Afflicted by still lower than expected sales of Windows Phones, this time, Nokia drops a hosting service for projects, projects.developer.nokia.com. Registered developers received an email starting with the following paragraph:

"With some sadness we announce that the Nokia Developer Projects service (https://projects.developer.nokia.com) will be discontinued in the following months (due to ongoing trend of low activity and increasing costs). Please backup any project data you wish to save as soon as possible (ideally within the next few weeks). After the service has been stopped all unsaved data will be lost!"

The email then goes on to detail on how to use git, mercurial or subversion to pull project data. It seems the news are still only distributed by email, no mention as of now (2013-07-18 11h30 GMT+2) on the Nokia developers site itself.

Particularly interesting is the "ongoing trend" line. It implies that, as feared, the situation keeps getting worse for Nokia, despite all optimism projected by upper management.

The problem with secret courts, secret executive orders and undisclosed legal reasoning is that even if Microsoft released some information as "transparency", can you really trust that they aren't holding something back or outright lying due to some other even more secret court order?

They were completely denying and fudging the question about Skype eavesdropping right up until the Snowden leaks. Then they did a complete 180 turn.So clearly they have no problem with obfuscating the discussion, why should we trust that any new information they provide is the whole truth and not some weasel legal loophole way of interpreting the facts? Kind of like how James Clapper weaseled and outright lied through his testimony to Congress. If these people are willing to lie to Congressmen and Senators, who the fuck are you?

I reckon Pandora's Box has been open and American technology companies will face an uphill, if not impossible, task to get anyone from the rest of the world to trust them again.

In the financial trading industry we have a term for those pundits who come on Bloomberg or CNBC and give advice on markets, stocks etc - they are talking their own book. It's hard to find common ground when the other party is still using Lynx. I can understand and strongly promote the idea of not upgrading just because it's the latest gadget or technology but rather consider the actual benefit of a upgrade and whether the marginal cost is justified, not to mention the harm to the environment by discarding last year's smartphone, tablet etc. However when you open the conversation by saying 'I use Lynx, do you think I have a problem?'. Fuck yea you have a problem. You should seek help. To paraphrase a pop culture saying - If you are still using Lynx in 2013, you might be a Luddite!

This really riles me that people are rejecting Windows 8 because it does not have a fucking 'Start' button. Just the mindless stupidity of it just boggles the mind. Windows 8 is fast, lean and very impressive OS. It continues the great work done on Windows 7 and really builds on that foundation. How fucking stupid are these people that they don't understand the Metro start screen is just a full screen modern version of the start button. Fucking Lowest Common Denominator morons dragging the rest of us down with them.
