Submission + - Slashcott: is the Altslashdot site OK? (soylentnews.org) 3

j_presper_eckert writes: Hello, and my apologies for the off-topic submission.

Is anyone else who's planning on joining the (very) imminent slashcott having difficulty in reaching altslashdot.org?

I ask because, despite several careful attempts, I have not yet been able to successfully reach the new wiki this evening. (It had been fine on Friday, though.) For me, the address is now resolving as soylentnews.org and is also showing as a parked domain courtesy of some place in France.

I'm concerned about the new site still not being "ready for primetime" despite the slashcott being almost literally around the corner. Did I somehow fumble-finger the link, or are others seeing the same thing when they try to reach Altslashdot??? TIA

Submission + - Stephen Hawking Was Wrong, So Ignore Whatever Scientists 1

An anonymous reader writes: Following Stephen Hawking's latest work on black holes (http://www.nature.com/news/stephen-hawking-there-are-no-black-holes-1.14583), Republican Michele Bachmann has brilliantly deduced that this proves "the danger inherent in listening to scientists" (http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2014/01/stephen-hawkings-blunder-on-black-holes-shows-danger-of-listening-to-scientists-says-bachmann.html?intcid=obnetwork). Expanding on her thesis, she said, "If black holes don’t exist, then other things you scientists have been trying to foist on us probably don’t either, like climate change and evolution." Her recommendation? All students who were "forced to learn" about black holes should now sue Dr. Hawking for a full refund. But not Bachmann — "Fortunately for me, I did not take any science classes in college,"

Try again... na-nu, na-nu!"

NB: Can see the comments when there is only a few of them, such as "Bitcoin Plunges after Mt. Gox Exchange halts trades" which ony has 2 comments. Someone neglected to see if it scaled on slow overseas connections (Australia).

There's no way to not get the fan or the pump working when compiling a couple thousand c++ code. Not even on those poser designer computers.

Really? I compile the kdepim suite on my PC and can't hear a thing. $30 after market CPU fan and SSD drive.

At work we have multiple VM servers running near silent - Noctua NH-U12S fans, they are an amazing piece of hardware.

Another shooting in the USA ... yeah yeah whatever. I really don't care anymore. You guys shoot yourselves up and scream about the 2nd amendment to your hearts content, sure as the sun rises tommorrow there will be another shooting soon and you won't do shit to change it

One thing for sure kiddies - it ain't news for nerds or stuff that matters, if it was, something constructive would be done. After all this time we have to conclude you idiots like it this way.
