So let me see if I understand what you're saying: A bunch of guys who are at war set up a rocket launcher with a timer, then go away leaving it unguarded so that anyone can walk up to it and, oh, I don't know, shut it off, blow it up, steal it, etc.?

Gimme a break.

I think it had its roots in the civil rights movement, where the key concept- that racial discrimination is bad morphed into ALL discrimination is bad including intellectual and physical ability, hence the handing out of awards to everyone for participating in an activity and the dumbing-down of school grades in a misguided effort to spare the self-esteem of the less "abled".

In a classic example, right wing Xtian nuts have seized on the recent inability to discriminate against stupid ideas and started pushing ID to be taught along side (and presumably to replace) evolution as if the two concepts were intellectually equivalent.

In this case, a crap result was called out as such. No names were mentioned, so only those who participated in producing the crap (they know who they are) had their self-esteem taken down a notch.

I disagree. Political correctness of the 90s has led to today's "rule" that all opinions are valid and of equal value when anyone with a functional brain knows they are not. Linus is merely saying what ought to be said. Maybe a little public ridicule will be the motivating force to ensure that this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

Would you prefer we hand the developers an award for "participation"?

Every time they come out with a new OS, the old one suddenly needs security "updates" at a faster and faster rate, and for some reason, more and more of them require reboots. Likewise MS Office- they change the file formats with each release to prevent compatibility with older versions and especially compatibility with freeware office suites.

The army tests experimental vaccines on soldiers, has made them stand and watch nuclear blasts to see what would happen, and God only knows what else. Do you really think they're going to tell you that you suffered brain trauma?

Human brains slosh around in a bag of fluid inside the skull. That is why people still suffer traumatic brain injuries even when they wear helmets.

The laws of physics are symmetric and apply equally to the people in the car and outside the car. The last thing you want is to stop a car dead at any speed.

OK, so the car has airbags to protect the occupants. Do you really want all the air bags going off every time a car is within striking distance (whatever that means) of a pedestrian or bicycle? There is no airbag between your brain and the inside of your skull. THAT is the real problem that needs to be solved.

I'd say what really needs to be focused on is educating people not to walk in front of cars.
