Perl is looked at like Natural and Cobol. Companies who hire people who know that are REALLY REALLY OLD (or new and really really DUMB). It's only good for maintaining until the system is rewritten in a proper language. You got to learn some modern (say, last 20 years) language. Besides, since you have 2 months of income left, and you should have at least a year of income in savings... you have time.

With 2 ides available to choose from (netbeans and visual studio). There's not much of a choice ... For the unknowledgable, at a minimum, an IDE provides a code editor, debugger, and GUI designer. There are only two IDEs to choose from at the time of this post.

I have had several. And yes, they are worth it... think of them as a clean sheet of paper ... to warp them as you want.

I know for fact that some arms in IBM and Microsoft uses the Oracle database. We work with the big three (Microsoft, IBM, Oracle) on a daily basis. You'd be surprised how much is shared between them. Outside of databases .... is a different story.

I am in Alaska as well, AK Marc. I am in Juneau, to be precise. We have no shortage of programmers in this town. We do have a shortage of companies that want decades of experience and degrees. Both which are not needed to do the job they are hiring for. Then we have the public sector ... State of Alaska for example. They pay 1/4 the average wage for a programmer, shoddy benefits (the new federal health care is cheaper for much better coverage, but we can't get it due to the union (thanks union!))... Raises? What raises... 1% if you are lucky every year. And let's not talk about how they scam people out of their puny raise when you hit longevity. They are literally trying to get rid of employees then turn around and complain that there are no programmers ...
