MySpace Takes on Google News and Digg 123

cyberianpan writes "According to a Times Online article, MySpace is going into the news business. They'll soon be premiering a service that will scour the internet for news stories and let users vote on which ones receive the most exposure. This approach blends elements of Google News and sites such as Digg and Netscape, which rely on readers to submit stories and determine their prominence. One could see where this might be the 'holy grail' of internet news. Not only will you be able to tap into the wisdom of the crowds, but ultimately your recommended stories could be influenced by the likes and dislikes of your friends/heroes."

Submission + - Fish-like sensors for underwater robots

Roland Piquepaille writes: "Today, both submarine and surface ships use sonar for navigation. But sonar and other vision systems face various limitations. So why not imitating fish? For millions of years, fish have relied on 'a row of specialized sensory organs along the sides of their bodies, called the lateral line' to avoid predators or to find preys. So engineers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have decided to build an artificial lateral line for submarines and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The first tests have been successful, and we can now envision a day where AUVs could detect and track moving underwater targets or avoid collisions with moving or stationary objects. Read more for additional details and a picture showing a future model of autonomous underwater robot using a artificial lateral line."

Journal Journal: new ip addresses for shank

The IP addresses for shank have changed. The new address is 108.10.142.57. The old address, 192.217.247.78, is going away very soon.

I've updated nameservice and apache to listen for the new address. Everything else should be listening on both addresses until .247.78 goes away. It might take 24-48 hours for the DNS change to propogate.

If you notice any problems with the switch, notify me immediately.

Journal Journal: spam assassin and clamscan

I've had spamassassin and clamscan installed for a while but never got around to why they weren't actually scanning the email :-) They're running now.

If you noticed, there was a period of several hours where some mail wasn't passing through due to a permissions problem between qmail scanner and clamd. That's been fixed and now shank is working on a huge queue of email (spam!)

Journal Journal: new trouble ticket system

I've set up a new system to help keep track of problems and feature requests from you. It's hosted on a separate server, so if shank goes down you'll hopefully still be able to reach buttons. The link is in the column on the right.

Your customer name is used as your userid and password. You may change that when you log in.

mysql is now running. Let me know if you have problems with that. Also I had the wrong version of "checkpassword" in the pop3 config. I put in "checkvpw" for virtual user mail and restarted the daemon.

Virtual-user mail appears to be working. I also turned on pop3. You should be able to relay mail through shank as before too, I fixed the smtp-auth and should work with a secure connection.

Merry Christmas!

Only thing I accomplished today was setting allow_url_fopen in php.ini and restarting the webserver. I'm off tomorrow so I should get more time to resolve the problems with virtual-user email.

perl cgi works now. If you are getting 500 Internal Server Error, the permissions are more strict now. Make sure your files are chmod 0755 with proper user:group settings.

For some reason mysql thinks it's already running when it's not. It won't bind to the UNIX socket. I'm running out of time today before work. If you have a hint, let me know :-)

With the reboot, single-drop email is working. Those of you (me included) that use virtual-user email, that still requires more work. So does mysql. Leave me a message if you notice something ELSE that doesn't work.

I took the server down for a reboot and it hasn't come back up. Waiting for the host. I'm headed off to work so unless they let me go early (not likely) I won't be able to do anything further until tonight. I'm expecing most of the services to operate normally when the machine comes back up.

Web sites that do not require mysql should be operating properly now.
