Protip right back at ya: Humans got out of the caves and invented food technology some thousands of years ago. You have better stuff to do with your time and brains than play pretend Tarzan.

While I don't condone animal cruelty, I don't much care for "mother nature" and its mindlessness either.

Yeah right, they hunt and eat seal hearts out of "necessity" as per m.ducharme, but they would really not prefer to have a Panera Bread restaurant next door. Cause you know, the real estate prices would really drop then! And all that free time from not living at a subsistence level, that would be just the worst thing possible for society right? And really, who needs time to think or create when you can be out killing stuff?

I'm sorry. If she's been through all that and still is stupid enough to pull that seal heart stunt, yeah she deserves that epitaph.

William Fucking Shatner at the very least inspired 2 or 3 generations of kids around the world to look at the stars and dream of achieving great things.

Yes, in fact I do. It was a pointless and barbaric public stunt.

Just because people are "indigenous" doesn't suddenly make them saints or angels or beyond reproach.

How about enabling them to move into the real world? Education and the like? Set up a Panera Bread or something? Oh wait.. not newsworthy enough. Lets keep the "indigenous" where they are! Dependent on handouts and and always on display for a pitying public in the yearly photo ops.

Good sentiments, but why stop there? Some people go beyond and call themselves 'world citizens', others call themselves just 'humans', others still just 'animals' and some claim to be just part of the universe.

I guess different people have different levels of self-definition.

But you are still expected to produce papers all of those years or you don't get to progress from stage to the next at all! I wonder how that works.

You're just showing you/your friends' shortsightedness/arrogance. Just being in the West does not automatically mean you lose all family and relationships. In fact, one could say the West enjoys usually a much more mature and nuanced set of relationships than India which is still struggling to come to terms with even basic sexuality. All that in addition to freedom and independence _from_ society if you want it, makes the West quite attractive to certain types of people. This has a direct correlation with creativity, the sort that can build an iPod or a Google search engine. You/your friends just see that top of the societal iceberg and proclaim its shallowness not realizing the history and the grandeur of ideas underlying it, stretching back to the Romans and Greeks.

IMO, the youth in India is being misled by the cry of development of infrastructure/technology thinking that's what will make them great, that merely adopting the outward look-n-feel of the West (better roads/taller buildings/more cars) is sufficient while ignoring wholesale the foundations that enabled the West to build those things and then improve on them. I think India can have modern facilities sure enough but it will not have modern people. The West for all its faults will still bear the burden of giving this world a direction.
