Submission + - Michael Mann cleared of falsifying, deleting data (newscientist.com)

krou writes: Penn State University has concluded an investigation into Michael Mann's role in the 'climategate' affair, and claims that he did not 'participate in, directly or indirectly, any actions with an intent to suppress or to falsify data', and that he did not 'delete, conceal or otherwise destroy emails, information and/or data'. However, the investigation did state that, 'After careful consideration of all the evidence and relevant materials, the inquiry committee could not make a definitive finding whether there exists any evidence to substantiate that Dr. Mann did engage in, or participate in, directly or indirectly, any actions that deviated from accepted practices within the academic community'. As a result, a further investigation will take place into this matter. The full report can be found here (pdf).

Submission + - 30-year-old woman shows boobs to teen on XBox Live (kdvr.com) 1

bluefoxlucid writes: Penny Arcade commented today on a newscasting covering sexual predation on XBox Live. It seems getting on the Internet can result in talking to complete strangers; and some strangers may ask strange, sexual questions or--in the case of one 30-year-old woman talking to a 16-year-old boy--show you their boobs. As we all know, 16-year-old boys are severely damaged by the sight of boobs; breasts are horribly toxic to males until midnight of their 18th birthday.

Submission + - Journal retracts original MMR vaccine-autism study (examiner.com)

mmmscience writes: Over ten years ago, Andrew Wakefield published one of the most controversial papers in modern medicine. Today, the journal Lancet has withdrawn that article, stating in a press release that they "fully retract this paper from the published record." The article in question was the very first to suggest a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. When it was published in 1998, the number of vaccines administered in the UK sharply declined leading the inevitable increase of fatal cases of the measles. Lancet's official retraction after Britain's General Medical Council hearing that found Wakefield acted unethically.

Comment Please fix title/headline (Score 1) 3

The title is not good. The core of the article says that "It was carried out by a team of skilled professionals, either on behalf of a foreign government or at the behest of anti-climate change lobbyists in the United States, he said." Saying 'spies' completely rubbishes the article. A better title would be "Climate e-mails stolen, foreign government or US lobbyists".

Submission + - Climate E-Mails Stolen by Spies, Not a 'Hacker' (independent.co.uk) 3

inthealpine writes: "A very clever nerd can cause a great deal of disruption and obviously make intelligence services very nervous, but a sophisticated intelligence operation is capable of yielding the sort of results we've seen here," [David King, Britain's former chief science adviser] told The Independent. King also went on to push the idea that American lobbyists could be behind the hacking. Does anyone else think that this could easily be a lone hacker or small group of hackers with an agenda? Why does it have to be a large government entity or a well funded lobby group? I'm not a hacker by any stretch, but this totally seems like something a 'lone hacker' could be inclined to do.

Submission + - China is Winning Global Race to Make Clean Energy

Hugh Pickens writes: "The NY Times reports that China vaulted past competitors in Denmark, Germany, Spain and the United States last year to become the world’s largest maker of wind turbines, has leapfrogged the West in the last two years to emerge as the world’s largest manufacturer of solar panels, and is pushing equally hard to build nuclear reactors and the most efficient types of coal power plants. These efforts to dominate renewable energy technologies raise the prospect that the West may someday trade its dependence on oil from the Mideast for a reliance on solar panels, wind turbines and other gear manufactured in China. “I do not accept a future where the jobs and industries of tomorrow take root beyond our borders — and I know you don’t either,” said President Obama in his State of the Union address to Congress, yet many Western and Chinese executives expect China to prevail in the energy-technology race. China’s biggest advantage may be its domestic demand for electricity, rising 15 percent a year. To meet demand in the coming decade, China will need to add nearly nine times as much electricity generation capacity as the United States which means Chinese producers will enjoy enormous efficiencies from large-scale production. “Most of the energy equipment will carry a brass plate, ‘Made in China,’ ” says K. K. Chan, the chief executive of Nature Elements Capital."

Submission + - Decreased Water Vapor Has Offset Global Warming (nature.com) 4

quaith writes: "Nature reports that a team led by researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration describe how a mysterious 10% drop in water vapor in the stratosphere since 2000 could have offset the expected warming due to greenhouse gases. The calculated offset is roughly 25%. The team's model also suggests that an increase in water vapor might have boosted earlier warming by about 30% in the 1980s and 1990s. This drop in atmospheric water vapor is now on the list of possible culprits causing average global temperatures to flatten out over the past decade, despite increasing greenhouse-gas emissions."

It is so ridiculous. Someone hates Tesla so much that they use Slashdot for misinformation purposes. The actual news is that Tesla is planning to phase out the existing model in favour of a new model. The title insinuates that Tesla is doing things that will stop electric cars from coming in production, which is utter bollocks. Watch user 'Wyatt Earp' for more misleading articles.

Submission + - Perpetual Motion DeLorean -- The Rest of the Story (examiner.com)

An anonymous reader writes: On Sept. 7, 2002, Slashdot posted a story about a Perpretual Motion Delorean?, saying "An electric-powered Delorean that can supposedly go 'hundreds of miles' at speeds over 100MPH without stopping to recharge will be tested today beginning at 8am at the Nashville Superspeedway." You might be interested to know "the rest of the story," more than seven years later, as the final shoe has dropped on this saga, with a 26 million dollar judgement against Carl Tilley and his wife, who propagated this scam that ran for several years. Probably the height of audacity was when Tilley told his shareholders in May of 2002 that GE had offered $2 billiion "sight unseen" to buy out the technology.
