Comment Re:2m? Not even close (Score 1) 119

Oh, how do you figure? The traditional investment portion was to be some $8M (to bring the budget up to ~$10M), and is supposedly already lined up, modulo the initial funding goal (I believe Chris stated as much during one of the Reddit AMA's).

Moreover, of all the extended goal possibilities in the poll, which do you seriously believe would go toward bringing in new backers? More missions than before? More NPCs? I suspect that the lion's share of backers who would be swayed by those (and the "improved FPS mode"...) have already pledged. Also, are you Seumas on Kickstarter as well? If so, then of all people, you should realize that Linux support has a greatly different level of importance on a crowd-funding campaign (where the Linux community is heavily active) than the wider gaming world.

Submission + - The Ten Greatest Fictional Statesmen (blogspot.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: Just in time for the U.S. elections, blogger Christopher Knight is so disgusted with real life politics that he has thoughtfully assembled a list of the Top Ten Greatest Fictional Statesmen found across various media. "What is a statesman?" he asks. "Someone, man or woman, who puts the good of those they serve above his or her own desires and ambitions... if sincere and selfless and capable leadership cannot be found in our real world, perhaps a look toward movies, books and television is in order." Knight also elaborates on the qualities that make each man, woman, extraterrestrial and wizard so admirable as leadership material.

Submission + - Will Star Citizen project fund Linux and Mac ports for CryENGINE 3? (robertsspaceindustries.com) 2

Mr. Jaggers writes: "Chris Roberts, game designer of Wing Commander fame, has had great success with his new crowd-funded Star Citizen project — so much that the $2m base goal has been smashed with weeks to go on the kickstarter portion of the campaign. Now Chris is floating a list of stretch goals for fans to vote on, with Linux and Mac support both listed as stretch goal candidates. Since Star Citizen is based on the popular CryENGINE 3 game engine, these stretch goals are equivalent to funding Linux and Mac ports of CryENGINE. Chris couldn't make any absolute promises yet, since he doesn't own the engine, but CryENGINE 3 already supports Android so at least there is existing OpenGL ES support to be leveraged towards adding Linux and Mac OpenGL support. If there is enough outpouring of cross-platform support from fans in this poll, Star Citizen could turn out to be the high-profile game that brings a AAA game engine to the growing Mac and Linux gaming communities — analogous to the role played by Wasteland 2 in bringing official Linux support to the Unity 4 engine popular among so many Indie developers."

Submission + - Minecraft Becomes More Popular Than Call of Duty on XBOX LIVE (gamespot.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Well, we all know that Minecraft is becoming one of the most popular games out there nowadays, however according to recent stats; Minecraft was the most played game on XBOX LIVE for the week of October 15. This means that it even beat the most played game on XBOX LIVE, Call of Duty.

The rankings for the most played games in the week of October 15th are as follows:
1. Minecraft
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
3. FIFA 13

It is no surprise that Minecraft on Xbox 360 has seen so much success. When the game first launched it made a profit within its first hour of release, but even so, it takes a lot to beat the ever popular COD series. Currently, Minecraft's console version is exclusive to Xbox 360 and the developers have done a great job of keeping it updated to keep fans happy. It's also important to mention how impressive it is for an Xbox Arcade game to be beating full retail games, especially recent releases such as Borderlands 2 and even Xbox favorite Halo: Reach.

However, it is unclear how long Minecraft's popularity will last. With the release of great upcoming games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, but I bet developer Mojang and Notch will be celebrating while they can, because this is a great accomplishment for them.

Submission + - Big Finish Games Bringing Back Full-Motion Video Adventure Games (joystiq.com)

Mr. Jaggers writes: "Widely remembered as the pioneers in Full-Motion Video adventure gaming, the creators of the beloved Tex Murphy futuristic neo-noir series of adventure games has successfully funded their latest installment, code named Project Fedora, via crowd-funding. The team conducted a successful AMA last week and will feature much of the original cast of characters (including game designer Chris Jones, as Tex himself), and, if his interest can be peaked, the voice talents of James Earl Jones, among others. It ought to be a real treat for fans of gritty hard-boiled detective stories who like their sci-fi dark and dystopian, to see an FMV game done right, by one of the only developers to have pulled it off well. Pre-orders are being taken here and here."

Submission + - Opera Mini 7 comes to feature phones and BlackBerry (blogspot.com)

aravinda1023 writes: "Opera Mini 7 has been available via the Google Play market since the end of March, but if you're still milking a feature phone for all it's worth, you haven't been able to enjoy the latest version of the mobile browser. Opera Mini 7 is now available for basic phones and BlackBerry, allowing these devices to store an unlimited number of speed dials and access the new Smart Page feature for shortcuts to favorite sites. In addition to those new features, Opera Mini 7 includes several improvements and tweaks, including upgrade notifications and the ability to close tabs with one click on touchscreen phones. Of course, the browser still promises to cut down on your device's bandwidth usage, so your flip phone can keep on chugging."

Submission + - Carmageddon: Reincarnation Linux Version confirmed (kickstarter.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: Stainless Games have been fundraising for Carmageddon: Reincarnation, a modern day remake of the classic Carmageddon racing games, on Kickstarter.com for weeks. Stainless said that if they hit 600,000 Dollars in pledges before time runs out, the would commit themselves to creating a Linux port of the game, as well as a MacOS port. PC gamers will get to play Carmageddon 4 first, with a February 2013 release date. The MacOS & Linux versions will follow the PC version later in 2013.

Submission + - Live Interview With GLaDOS From Portal (twitch.tv)

Mr. Jaggers writes: "Chris Pope (podcaster from Tech Jives Network and social media guy for the Guys From Andromeda game studio) is being joined by Ellen McLain, the voice actress of GLaDOS from Valve's series of Portal games in an informal live chat on Twich TV right now (12pm PST / 3pm EST, United States time zones). Ellen's other voice work includes the announcer from Team Fortress 2, as well as appearing in the other games in Valve's 2007 Orange Box release (Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two). The chat can be joined via IRC or from the Twitch TV website, and Ellen will be available to fans for questions, including her work with Valve, as well as future projects (including the spiritual-successor to the Space Quest series of adventure games). The podcast of it will be up later on for those that miss the chat, but for those that can join in, it ought to be real treat to be able to ask GLaDOS why she was so mean to us..."

Comment Tough slog (Score 1) 9

I love the concepts in this project; in particular, I've been waiting nearly 20 years for sci-fi satire this good in playable form. Recent reboots of Hitchhikers Guide and other sci-fi comedy have been largely disappointing. Here comes a project with fresh ideas populated within a classic milieu; the adventure game. The fan base for this genre is surprisingly broad, but distributed, and it's terribly frustrating to continually (nearly each day in the campaign) find interested parties who were completely unaware of even the most basic of campaign details (i.e., the game creators recent reunion, as reported, finally, by Gamasutra).

This recently came to a head when one of our backers discovered a Google+ hangout in progress with a group of classic adventure game fans were replaying classic Space Quest , blissfully unaware that simultaneously, the very creators of the franchise were running a public live steam of commentary on the very same games!! It was the first head-through-keyboard moment of frustration I've had in years...
