Even being a guardian, he had to overcome challenges. Like not sticking out as a guardian (even though there was a myth surrounding the "lonely Roman"). He also had to go where ever the box went, without looking suspicious. He had to learn different languages. And I'm sure he didn't spend 2000 years twiddling his thumbs. :) He must've been involved in something.

I don't deny that Rory is a compassionate character. But I don't think his compassion is due to waiting around 2000 years. I think waiting around 2000 years was due to his compassion. Sure his memory of being an Auton gives him a unique perspective on what the Flesh has to go through, but I think his character is just the sort that would be more accepting regardless.

My point is, he has experienced, first hand, the progression of humanity from sword swinging conquerors to modern day civilization. He's GOT to have grown. I would enjoy seeing more of that, and less of "this situation is dangerous.. to prove it, let's kill Rory.. again".

Amy Pond annoys me btw, I'm glad she won't feature much in the next episode, time for Rory to stand up and become a more central character as I like him very much. He has a heart and doesn't seem as self-centred as Amy (he was moved by the TARDIS dying in the previous story). Rory also isn't the racist Amy is.

Rory really is an untapped goldmine in this series. He's what, a thousand years OLDER than the doctor now? I'm rather surprised that waiting around for Amy to get out of the Pandorica hasn't matured his character any.

Submission + - File organization - how do you do it? 4

siddesu writes: After 30 years of being around computers, I have, like everyone else, amassed a huge amount of files in huge amount of formats about a huge amount of topics. And it isn't only me — the family has now a ton of data that they want managed and easily accessible.

Keeping all that information in order has always been a pain, but it has gone harder as the storage has increased and people and files and sizes have multiplied.

What do you folks use to keep your odd terabyte of document, picture, video and code files organized — that is, relatively uniformly tagged, versioned, searchable and ultimately findable, without 50 duplicates over your 50 devices and without typing arcane commands in a terminal window?

I found this discussion from 2003 and this tangentially relevant post from 2006. How have things changed for you in 2011?

And how satisfied is your extended family with the solution you have unleashed upon them?

Submission + - BlackBerry devices to run Android apps (bloomberg.com)

crankyspice writes: RIM is allegedly prepping the QNX-based operating system running their forthcoming PlayBook tablet to run Android applications, according to a Bloomberg article. As RIM has stated (http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/07/rims-mike-lazaridis-qnx-coming-to-blackberry-phones-when-dual/) that the QNX platform will run at least some of its upcoming smartphones as well, this could cinch Android's status as the lingua franca of smartphone application environments, especially with BlackBerry's current market leadership (http://www.wirelessandmobilenews.com/2011/02/nokia-iphone-blackberry-samsung-htc-top-smartphone-makers-says-htc.html) and Android's explosive marketshare growth (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/01/android-beats-nokia-apple-rim-in-2010-but-firm-warns-about-2011.ars).

That reminds me of one of my favourite old 8-bit games, Alternate Reality by Datasoft. Instead of the usual dungeon creatures you'd face, a backup copy would pit you against an FBI agent who attacked you with "The Long Arm of the Law". A lot less subtle, but fun to try and beat with your high level characters.

Prince Says Internet Is Over 450

the_arrow writes "According to the artist currently known as Prince, 'The internet's completely over.' At least that what he says in an interview with the British newspaper Mirror. Quoting Prince: 'The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you.'"

The thing is that Sony shouldn't get to decide what I do with my hardware. Yeah I'm sure this relates to the linux thing too, but they're telling me "We know we told you you could do it, but now we've changed our minds and if you want to continue using your PS3, you never will be able to install linux in the future." What's next? BluRay movies get disabled? I bet more people would care then, or would we just hear "So what? It's a games machine, not a video player."

This argument always seems short-sighted to me. Eventually this generation of consoles will become irrelevant. So instead of having an old PS3 that only plays old PS3 games (or even older PS2 and PS1 games) sitting in a corner gathering dust, why not install linux on it and give it a new purpose? Maybe as a media center? MythTV front-end? MAME box? Shouldn't I be able to decide what to do with the hardware? Maybe I don't want linux on it NOW, but in the future it would keep it useful. Sony is trying to limit my options, and since there's no way to downgrade, it's a permanent limitation.
