Comment Re:.NET Anyone? (Score 1) 265

Actually, even if Firefox kept an encrypted store of what DLLs it had told the user about, there really isn't any way to prevent a malicious program from simply replicating the code used to create the store, so it would be pretty hard to always notify the user.

Google update is initiated here on my system (it looks like it is intended to facilitate installing updates to Google software while using Firefox, I would be surprised if it was doing anything nefarious):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins

I guess the DRM plugins are loaded because Firefox treats the Windows Media Player directory as a plug-in directory, by default:

Submission + - SSL renegotiation attack becomes reality (theregister.co.uk)

rastos1 writes: A Turkish grad student has devised a serious, real-world attack on Twitter that targeted a recently discovered vulnerability in the SSL protocol. The exploit by Anil Kurmus is significant because it successfully targeted the so-called SSL renegotiation bug to steal Twitter login credentials that passed through encrypted data streams. All in all, a man in the middle is able to steal the credentials of a user authenticating himself through HTTPS to a trusted website.

The attack description is available on securegoose.org

In a program called "Keeping America Great" shown on CNBC, Gates was asked by a university student how he felt about the Apple chief executive. "Of all the leaders in the industry that I've worked with he's showed more inspiration and he saved the company."

Submission + - iPhone vs. BlackBerry vs. Droid vs. Pre (infoworld.com) 2

snydeq writes: "InfoWorld's Galen Gruman provides an in-depth comparison of Apple iPhone 3G S, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, RIM BlackBerry Bold, and RIM BlackBerry Storm 2, rating each smartphone on a variety of features important for personal use and in regulated business environments. Although the iPhone comes out on top as a personal device, the BlackBerry Bold remains the best handset for IT to support in regulated contexts. 'The latest Android 2.0-based "iPhone killer" won't kill the iPhone or the BlackBerry — and the cheaper HTC Droid Eris is the new smartphone that I think Apple should be concerned about,' Gruman writes. Included in the report are various side-by-side comparisons, as well as a requirements calculator to help assess which smartphone fits your Web support, business connectivity, app support, security, voice, and usability needs."

Submission + - Facebook message frees NYC robbery suspect (google.com)

SpuriousLogic writes: NEW YORK — A 19-year-old New York City man arrested on robbery charges has been exonerated thanks to his Facebook page.
Rodney Bradford was held for 12 days on suspicion of robbing two people on Oct. 17 in the Brooklyn public housing complex where he lives.
Bradford and witnesses insisted he was innocent. They said he was at his father's Harlem apartment when the crime occurred.
A playful message was posted on Bradford's Facebook page one minute before the robbery. In it, he asked his girlfriend where his pancakes were.
Prosecutors dropped the charges after Facebook verified the words had been typed from a computer at his father's building.
