Comment Re:Drop the GNU. (Score 1) 145

It'll probably be a command line tool or library that nobody will use in its pure form; instead, they'll use a GUI frontend with a completely different name. I expect it'll eventually be built into Pidgin and other chat programs.

Of course, I didn't read the article so it's all a mystery! I love surprises.

And finally one IM/SIP/irc/etc Client for all your needs .

And other "services" do not ? Look at skype for example you have to connect to other nodes to open a call it is not a direct connection. Who is to say that some rogue node is in between ? SIP can be 2 way and not multi node.

With GNU Free Call everything is open sourced. It would be a whole hell of a lot easier to find out and eventually block bad nodes, MitM, etc. Also not to mention some people who like to use OSS and operating systems will finally have a decent service/client to use on multiple platforms with other people if this takes off. Unlike the oh so "free" _less than better_ stuff we have now.

Andrew Smith writes: Reports the BBC: A mother from Kent has been told she cannot use her Facebook account because she shares a name with Prince William's fiancee. Kate Middleton, from Pembury, said the social networking site had accused her of impersonating her famous namesake. Ms Middleton, who set up her account two years ago, said she was shocked at the decision. Facebook said it made the occasional mistake and would seek to resolve the issue.

Submission + - Obama Nominates RIAA Lawyer for Solicitor General (wired.com)

Xiph1980 writes: President Barack Obama on Monday nominated former Recording Industry Association of America lawyer Donald Verrilli Jr. to serve as the nation’s solicitor general.

The solicitor general is charged with defending the government before the Supreme Court, and files friend-of-the court briefs in cases in which the government believes there is a significant legal issue. The office also determines which cases it would bring to the Supreme Court for review.

Verrilli is best known for leading the recording industry’s legal charge against music- and movie-sharing site Grokster. That 2003 case ultimately led to Grokster’s demise when the U.S. Supreme Court sided with the RIAA’s verdict.

Electronics In Flight — Danger Or Distraction? 532

another similar writes "IEEE Spectrum has a blog post revisiting the debate on whether electronic devices pose a risk to flight avionics spurred by a NY Post article about Arianna Huffington's refusal to power down her Blackberry during takeoff. The post points out the EU's removal of their own ban on cell phone use in 2007 and the likelihood of significant non-compliance daily in the US — and curiously, planes haven't been falling from the sky at a similar rate. While the potential exists for there to be a problem, it would appear the risk is low. Ever bent the rules? Is an app for landing commercial jets somewhere in our future?"

Submission + - Sony Plans Serial Keys for PlayStation3 Games (thinq.co.uk)

Stoobalou writes: Rumour has it that Sony is looking to the PC games market to help solve its growing piracy problem on the PlayStation 3 — with the introduction of serial keys to its games.

According to 'a very reliable source' quoted by PS3-Sense, Sony is attempting to address the recent revelation that it failed to properly secure the private signing key for its flagship console — leading to clever tinkerers producing third-party firmware that allows unofficial software and illegitimately downloaded games to run on unmodified hardware — by looking to the PC retail market for solutions.

Unlike the PS3, the PC doesn't have a hardware DRM system built in to it — despite attempts by groups like the Trusted Computing Group, formerly the Trusted Computer Platform Alliance, to introduce such a thing — relying instead on software-based DRM and a surprisingly old-fashioned guarantee of a game's uniqueness: a serial key.

The letter states and points out such concerns as 'Community Objections', 'Lack of Transparency' , and 'Malicious Conduct' the reasons of concern from the RIAA.

As noted above, we are concerned that a music themed gTLD will be used to enable wide scale copyright and trademark infringment

Comment New Media New Model (Score 1) 228

'The fear among the producers now is that it's impossible to imagine an audience of around 400 people at the recording of a TV show like Red Dwarf, where nobody does a bit of a hint on Twitter, or sneaks a picture on Facebook or posts a bit of badly shot video on YouTube.'

Wow just wow . How about adapting and embracing new technology instead of moving a step backwards ? This confirms still, how old fashioned some in the entertainment industry think. E.g. why not offer a 'live' showing per stream in HD ? If it is a good show and not some _crap_ then why are they so afraid of twitter, youtube, etc etc. Actually if enough people talk positive about it isn't that a bonus for the show? There are many possibilities how to adapt to new models but instead of thinking about the positives of using new models, these types concentrate on the new negatives.

So now live viewers will most likely have tight security before entering the viewing. Leave all electronic devices with security pick up after show etc (same old story). Because some decision makers can't think outside the box.

New Red Dwarf Series Threatened By the Twitter Era 228

An anonymous reader writes "The announcement that the new series of Red Dwarf is likely to be shot in front of a studio audience, which hasn't happened for the show since 1998, has made one of the show's actors wary of the practicality of it. Commenting on his blog, Robert Llewellyn, who plays servile robot Kryten in the hit British SF comedy show notes: 'The fear among the producers now is that it's impossible to imagine an audience of around 400 people at the recording of a TV show like Red Dwarf, where nobody does a bit of a hint on Twitter, or sneaks a picture on Facebook or posts a bit of badly shot video on YouTube.'"

Arrandale is also a complete mess on some platforms like fedora for e.g.Currently now running gentoo with xorg 1.9. and kernel 2.6.37.7 and feeling lucky that most things are now working on an Arrandale platform.
