Microsoft Asks Fed For Bailout 346

snydeq writes "Microsoft requested on Tuesday some $20 billion in bailout funds from the federal government, claiming that as the company controls an overwhelming share of the OS market, it is too big to fail. Low adoption rates for Vista, the ensuing ad campaign trying to convince people that they really do like Vista, and the increased need for development resources to rush Windows 7 to market to make people forget about Vista have necessitated the bailout, the company said. 'We want to make it absolutely clear that this is not a crisis of mismanagement,' said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in a prepared statement. 'This is simply a crisis of dollars — a crisis of not having enough dollars coming our way.'"

Warner Bros. Acquires The Pirate Bay 348

mlingojones writes "TorrentFreak breaks the news of The Pirate Bay's acquisition by Warner Bros: 'After years of hostility, lawsuits, police raids and heated invective between the two groups, the Pirate Bay has today announced they have settled their differences with US media conglomerate Warner Bros. The largest BitTorrent tracker has sold out to Hollywood and the two have agreed a deal.'"

I make no claims about being a superior person but I know that I am having a superior computational experience versus the guy next to me with an Acer laptop running Vista. Credit goes 100% to the glowing logo.

It was worth the Apple tax and I would be overjoyed to continue to pay that tax so that I can use a computer whose UI is not an insult to my intelligence, as limited as that intelligence may be. I wish people would shut up about the proprietary hardware. If you don't "get it", go use Vista or some distro of Linux on commodity hardware. If you like that, fine. A lot of us couldn't be bothered to put up with that crap.

Emulation Explosion On the PS3 Via Linux 425

Marty writes "The PlayStation 3 has recently seen an explosion of releases of emulators and games for the Yellow Dog Linux distro for PS3; once you have installed Yellow Dog Linux you then have the ability to try out MAME, SNES, Amiga, Dos, Commodore and Atari emulators (that's the tip of the iceberg) and such games as Quake 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen 2 and Alephone. Time to start installing Linux on your PS3?"

Shiv Sena are a bunch of corrupt racist bastards. This judgement smacks of someone having bought the Supreme court so that they would have the power to crack down on people who have negative things to say about them and their bullshit political agenda. They are not above violence, torture, extortion, anything. I fear that nothing can stop these sectarian fucks from ruining my country. Where once the press had the freedom to poke fun at any politician they felt like, now they have to walk on eggshells.

Submission + - First zero emission polar base opened (antarcticstation.org)

spectrokid writes: The brand new Princess Elisabeth station in Antarctica has just been inaugurated. Not only does it look as if it comes out of a science fiction movie, it is also the first zero emission base on the pole. A combination of solar cells, windmills and a lot of insulation means the base will not need to burn dino-fuel, even at -50 C winter nights. Is this good enough to convince the skeptics that alternative energy is a viable solution?

Word. To say IE gained market share through its own "excellence" is laughable. How can Mike Connor be making such a dumb statement? With a straight face? When tech people hang around other tech people for long enough they forget that people out there are really dumb and believe nothing but IE and Windows exists. It's there, so they use it. Some people even after being introduced to Firefox don't even perceive a difference.

Human-Animal Hybrids Fail 554

SailorSpork writes "Fans of furries and anime-style cat girls will be disappointed by the news that attempts to create human animal hybrids have failed. Experiments by British scientists to create embryonic stem cells by putting human DNA into cow or rabbit eggs had raised ethical concerns, but the question of how we would treat sub-humans will have to wait until we actually figure out how to make them."

Dvorak Layout Claimed Not Superior To QWERTY 663

Michael Pyne sends in an article published at Reason Online 13 years ago, dismantling the entrenched myth that the Dvorak keyboard layout is a superior technology to QWERTY. The odd thing is that this 13-year-old article recaps research (refereed and published in a respected economics journal) 19 years ago. While we have discussed Dvorak many times over the years, I don't believe we have dug into this convincing-sounding refutation of the Dvorak mythology. The article is in the context of arguing against the conventional wisdom of "first mover advantage" — that the first product to market gains a large entrenchment benefit, such as VHS vs. Beta, MS-DOS vs. anything, etc. It's very much a pro-markets piece.
