How Sperm Whales Offset Their Carbon Footprint Screenshot-sm 150

Boy Wunda writes "Scientists at Flinders University in South Australia found that in an awesome example of design by Mother Nature, Southern Ocean sperm whales offset their carbon footprint by simply defecating – an action that releases tons of iron a year and stimulates the growth of phytoplankton which absorb and trap carbon dioxide. If only we humans could say the same for our poop, which really doesn't do much more than just sit there." I'm going to do my part by buying some iron supplements and a can of chili, and heading off toward the ocean.

Amazon Seeks 1-Nod Ordering Patent 194

theodp writes "Amazon.com is famous for its patented 1-Click ordering system. But what about 1-Nod ordering? Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is seeking a patent on a system that would let people make purchases with a nod, a smile, or even a raise of the eyebrow. Bezos' invention — 'Movement Recognition as Input Mechanism' — envisions a computing device that could interpret certain facial expressions and enhance or potentially replace conventional input devices such as keypads and touch screens."

Lomborg does not deny that the green house effect exists. His point is that it is very costly to avoid raising the temperature, and therefore he suggests that we ignore the green house effect and spend our money elsewhere. I think that is fair enough to make such a cost benifit analysis. After all there is lots of evil in this world and somehow we have to choose. The problem is that Lomborg as a person has a bad reputation for cheating with the numbers. Therefore is probably not be the right person to perform this cost benifit analysis.

Motorola's Rumored Android Phone Focuses on Screen Size 134

nottheusualsuspect excerpts from this speculation-laden report at Brighthand that "Motorola is reportedly working on a device that will have one of the largest displays of any smartphone. Code-named the Shadow, it will sport a 4.3-inch WVGA+ touchscreen, Google's Android OS, and a range of other high-end features. When it comes to screen size, the Shadow will be equaled only by the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2. The closest Android-powered model will be the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which will sport a 4.0-inch display. Most other models, like the Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One, have 3.7-inch screens. The display on this upcoming Motorola smartphone will allegedly have a resolution of 850 by 484 pixels."

The alternative is to reach out to a lot of schools and make sure that each school has a few working second hand stationary computers. It is better to have a cheap solution for the many than an expensive solution for the few. When I worked in India, I heard a talk by a guy from the Shikshana foundation, and I was really impressed by the way they worked. It sounded like they could achieve a lot with fairly small means http://www.sikshana.org/

In northern Europe we have a long history of using taxes on water and energy to guide the industry. We have a capitalist system, but we use taxes to punish polluting companies.

This works well for a single country, but it is hard to make several countries align their tax systems, because each country has different interests.
