Comment Fix Yahoo / Flickr (Score 3, Informative) 242

I propose that Yahoo gets it's finger out of it's backside and fix Flickr. For months I've been trying to get a "pro" account to upload more photograhs than the standard freebie 200. However like many other complaints in the forums, Yahoo seem to not be bothered in fixing the billing system, many can't log in to even create a billing account, others can't pay or renew what they have. Sounds a bigger problem then just re-arranging how the chairs and desks are in an office for better Feng shui.

Comment Question of trust (Score 1) 521

This is a question of trust. Remember how Intel released in one of their Pentium line of processors that deliberately leaked the processor ID. Oh sure, you could switch it off in the BIOS, but users DIDN'T trust that, and sales did not go well until the next processor.

Now you're willing to trust Microsoft with an "off switch" to their competition killing lock-out "secure boot" loader. More fool you.

And where are the alternate BIOS manufactureres? About time to shove Phoenix and the rest up their secure behinds.

Comment Conditions (Score 1) 250

I last changed ISPs a few years ago when my last ISP tried to pull a fast one, changing their terms and conditions to introduce traffic shaping (DPI) instead of buying bandwidth. But it was not just any kind of shaping, they wnated to throttle certain traffic based on time of day, so you could not do work when YOU wanted, but when THEY wanted. They even had the nerve to prioritise their VoIP service over Skype and other such services.

Lucky there was a clause that you can leave penalty free if the ISP changes contract and you refuse to accept it, so that's what I did.

Comment Compromises (Score 5, Insightful) 663

I have had to make a compromise in using the Nvidia driver. It's a "black box", so you don't know what is in it or how others might be able to improve on it, but on the other hand, it does the 3D work for stuff like KDE, Google Earth or 3D games like Brutal Chess or BZflag.

In Mageia, there is the Nouveau free driver, it works very well for 2D stuff, but does not work for 3D stuff.

So it depends on your requirements, and how wedded you are to the "Free" concept. Having said that, if there was a free driver that does 3D on Nvidia cards, I'd take it.

Considering Skype STILL have not released a 64bit* version or one that works properly with Phonon, I can guess the Linux users will be safe from adverts too. * Static or dynamic are NOT 64bit versions, they drag a whole pile of 32bit junk. It's pathetic as the only application in Linux that refuses to be designed / built for 64bit systems.

Submission + - UN to debate taxing internet data (cnet.com)

Wowsers writes: In an effort to get ever more taxes for doing absolutely nothing, the United Nations are to consider a European proposal to tax the internet based on data that gets sent. The proposal is designed to get money from large bandwidth users like Google, Facebook, Apple, and Netflix. Smaller companies that have high bandwidth would be forced off the internet due to the taxes.

The proposed measure is also claimed to be an effective tool for censorship as companies will just block access to countries to limit the amount of taxes they pay for data.
