Comment Dealer-only (Score 1) 196

Dealers have a huge incentive to offer you good service on your car maintenance. If they screw you on an oil change, when the time comes to replace your car, you'll think twice before buying the same brand again.

Plus, your car won't get stuffed with Chinesium parts.

Comment You want your best people to leave? (Score 4, Insightful) 208

Because this is how you get your best people to leave.

People that consider themselves lucky to be working at Google because they'll never make that kind of money anywhere else will be the last to voluntarily leave

This sort of announcement is universally a sign that working at that company is going to suck for the foreseeable future. I understand it from the CEO's perspective. During economic turmoil, he'll need to have some good news to report to shareholders so he can prolong his tenure for as long as possible. But the real bottom line is that he's hollowing out the company culture and atmosphere to stay in the shareholder's favor for just one er two bonus and equity cycles longer.

Amazon surely knows which users actually watched the whole thing, right? So why not give them an anonymous, but unique link to leave a review?
I'm sure we cannot trust the IMDB statistics once the Internet goes on a crusade, but I don't much trust the 'official' sources either, seeing as how they're just part of marketing these days, with early access in return for a positive review.

Comment Crypto is useless (Score 2, Insightful) 56

One purpose of a currency is to be a safe value store. Crypto clearly does a much worse job than fiat. I'm not really sure what crypto does actually do for society. Except apparently make banks useless? But you know what, I'm mostly good with the heavily regulated banks and other institutions.

Comment Office or commute or private life? (Score 2) 143

I do miss the office. The quick interactions. Lunch together. Morning coffee and breakfast. Working together at the same computer. Laughing with colleagues. All face to face, zoning out on the train with no human contact for a bit.
But it's not worth the 1+hour commute one way. Or rather, I do things in those extra hours that I don't want to lose. Be with my wife and kids, go to the shop for fresh groceries, cook healthy dinner.
If my office were around the corner, I wouldn't think about it twice.
