This sort of announcement is universally a sign that working at that company is going to suck for the foreseeable future. I understand it from the CEO's perspective. During economic turmoil, he'll need to have some good news to report to shareholders so he can prolong his tenure for as long as possible. But the real bottom line is that he's hollowing out the company culture and atmosphere to stay in the shareholder's favor for just one er two bonus and equity cycles longer.

I do miss the office. The quick interactions. Lunch together. Morning coffee and breakfast. Working together at the same computer. Laughing with colleagues. All face to face, zoning out on the train with no human contact for a bit.
But it's not worth the 1+hour commute one way. Or rather, I do things in those extra hours that I don't want to lose. Be with my wife and kids, go to the shop for fresh groceries, cook healthy dinner.
If my office were around the corner, I wouldn't think about it twice.

I'll agree that creating a program that compiles and works in a particular circumstance, has become easier over time.
But creating a system that fulfills all its written and unwritten!!! requirements is really hard, and despite all the libraries out there, not getting easier.

Especially publicly accessible social media, as they compete with news agencies.
Find an interesting article, and share it with a friend? Fine. Spamming the entire internet with poorly researched articles with a few clicks of a mouse button. Not fine.

The implications of finding life this nearby would be huge. Either life develops wherever it can. Or panspermia is a real thing. Both would be indicators that we're missing a piece of the Fermi paradox.
