Yeah, just saying - you have to price it so low to beat the "new" price that you start to reconsider whether its worth selling. Case in point - HL1 + expansions - $15 new, so I'm selling for $10. At that price I think a lot of people would rather keep the games.

I don't disagree that people should have the choice - but people aren't being seriously disadvantaged by losing their right to sell.

No. You can't really sell.

Also theres the question of finding a buyer. The cost of a "second hand era" game on Steam is quite cheap - eg Half-Life 1 is $10, Half-Life 2 is $20.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/

Theres not really much point selling my Steam "second-hand" games collection for me anyway. All the old games (HL1 and expansions) I'd want to sell are avaliable in the "Half-Life Anthology" pack - for $15.

You could buy everything I have installed in the "Valve Complete Pack" with the exception of GTA4 for $100.

So I guess it inflates the cost of older games slightly. I'd probably prefer to buy HL1 "new" from Valve for $10 - rather than messing around with HeadCrabHumper23 on ebay to save a couple of bucks tbh.

OSS isn't a panacea, and it's not going to give you things you don't have. It just means it's POSSIBLE to fix those problems. With closed source software, all the training, knowledge, and possibly even money in the world won't help you fix the closed source software.

Thats not entirely true. MS will happily take your money to maintain legacy apps - like NT4 if you so choose.

Probably better to pay them as well IMO - its not like you would want to skill up a bunch of in-house guys on MS's codebase :P

Yeah its pretty much assclowing IMO. I just booted my Vista laptop this morning. Process explorer shows 9300B idle cycles vs around 200B for other shit (mostly Opera, Steam, and sony's shitty phone sync). Taking them out we're left with bugger all - around 10B cycles "wasted" by default Vista services etc (well, actually SetPoint, AVG, Daemon tools, but regardless). Most of these aren't actually doing anything, just sitting there having started and are now idle. Looks like close as makes no odds 100% CPU avaliable for their JVM.

So according to this, the OS has fuck all overhead in terms of services. So either the kernel is managing the 50% overhead we saw in the SciMark test - or their tests / JVM are crap.

I'd tend towards thinking the latter.

The "real" cell chip is used in "real" supercomputers - not the stripped down one with only 7 SPUs in the PS3. We're talking like 32 of the babys.

Thats how you make an efficient supercomputer - not by wiring together a bunch of toys (even if they do run *nix).

I liked Steam until I bought GTA4. I had hoped that by getting on Steam that there would be the nice happy Steam DRM experience (ie: it just works) rather than the assrape.

I had to sign up and sign in to both Games For Windows Live, and Rockstar Social Club. I had to link these profiles together (or the game would crash on startup with an MMA10 error). I had to install SecureROM and activate my copy. As there is apparantly unlimited activations, I'm not sure who is actually benefiting from this additional DRM.

Then theres a whole bunch of performance issues and crashes, which presumably will be patched. Still, its a fucking dodgy console port, and I suggest that anyone who isn't really really interested in the multiplayer to pirate the damn thing.

I wasted twice the value of the game in my time trying to get the goddamn thing to work.

Are you hearing this Rockstar? If I'd waited for the Skulluptra rip, I wouldve had one-fucking-click install, and none of your bullshit. I paid you to get fucked right up the arse. Good luck getting another sale out of me - you are going to have to put some damn good multiplayer in everything you sell now - or you can fuck right off.
