Comment And, they prosecute you for removing em again! (Score 1) 162

Not only are they forced to take old electronics back for free, they also report you to the police if you try to remove anything from their forced junkpile.
There is really big money in this received hardware, both in it's recycle and on getting it out of circulation so you buy the new products.
If you head off a guy who is about to throw away some old hardware however, they get really unsure about how to treat you. They want to claim you are stealing, but at the same time they are unsure about from whom...

(Yes I like to take a peek and see what is in the bins, I once "found" 20 boxes of fiber patch cable giving me a nice kick for my home fiber project.)

Comment Asus Infinity (Score 1) 657

I for one did not want a i-whatever. Too limited and I really wanted to be able to turn it into a laptop whenever I needed to type a lot.
I waited while the diferent pads came and went, and finally with the Infinity I ran out and got one. The price didn't really bother me but the first few weeks had software bugs I think was hurting it.
Now that most seem to be fixed it is definately the tablet for me, and I suspect a lot of others like me.
In the coming months the new android version will bew released on it too, making it even more attractive.
People will undoubtedly nag about existing apps and such for the iwhatever but that has to do with userbase and time on market. I mean, just because someone has said baaaaah longer than moooh doesn't mean we shouldn't go for the juicy burger. hehe.

Comment Functional is not ugly either. (Score 4, Insightful) 370

Don't forget functional.
Today everything has to look like it has been released by apple or it's ugly.

I cringe when I see all the resources and battery consumption that go into features like false reflections in metallic buttons on a friggin screen.

I want a website that is designed for quick lookups to be just that, quick! And, it is!

Comment Already disabled. (Score 1) 498

Hurray!
I disabled that feature as soon as I could anyway as I want to decide where to search.
I know perfectly well if I am looking for something on the internet or on the phone, in fact, the way I store stuff on my phone I *never* have to search for it. I know where I put it!

Useless feature - useless patent - useless case.

Comment Whay they measure and how they send it... (Score 1) 684

They can measure and report multiple times pr hour and may send data wirelessly so as to be picked up by people interested in your power use. It may be people wanting to know if you are really at home, or people wanting to diturb the system to screw with your bill.
You use advanced light-switches with randomizing on/off times to fake being at home, but you don't cook dinners or take showers making your power consumption very low and not peaking in the right places. This could easily indicate to a thief that you are not home.

In addition there are talks of shutting off individual meters/circuits by the e-works through these smart meters.
What kind of safeguards are there to prevent others (insert misused word: hackers) from doing the same?

Comment Re:Near miss? Near hit, rather.... (Score 1) 120

I know it's not, but it is being used to describe an event that is not goverened by fluke chances and moment, but of gravity. It is 100% deterministic and we can calculate it. Compared to turbulant flow of gas/liquid for example, it's simple...
Then there's the fact that it's called a new miss when a near miss would be a glancing hit semantically speaking.

Comment Re:Near miss? Near hit, rather.... (Score 2) 120

Yes, I wish they would stop using the term. Is is not just misleading and stupid, it's wrong too.
A near miss relates to situations where chance played a role averting a disaster. Since this asteroid has been traveling on it's well-defined path and wil lcontinues to do so, modified ofcource by bodys it passes, it has nothing to do with chance and no ammount of butteryflys flapping their wings could have made it hit earth.
It was rather:
- a near hit
- a narrow escape
- a close encounter
- a close call

Since this was a case of moving objects the correct term is:
- near collision

Comment Random traffic and search generator? (Score 1) 312

How much data do they really think they will need to store pr individual?
What if we multiply that by 1000000?
For every search you do on a search engine, a script could create a few thousand extra.
For every website you visit, the crawler will visit a hundred.
Encapsulating traffic in the wrong protocol may also be fun.
