Submission + - SourceForge grabs GIMP for Windows' account, wraps installer in bundle-pushing (arstechnica.com) 1

shanehiltonward writes: SourceForge, the code repository site owned by Slashdot Media, has apparently seized control of the account hosting GIMP for Windows on the service, according to e-mails and discussions amongst members of the GIMP community—locking out GIMP's lead Windows developer. And now anyone downloading the Windows version of the open source image editing tool from SourceForge gets the software wrapped in an installer replete with advertisements.

Update: In a blog post issued shortly after this story posted, an unidentified member of SourceForge's community team wrote that, in fact, "this project was actually abandoned over 18 months ago, and SourceForge has stepped-in to keep this project current." That runs counter to claims by members of the GIMP development community.

The GIMP project is not officially distributed through SourceForge—approved releases are only posted on the GIMP project's own Web page. But Jernej Simoni, the developer who has been responsible for building Windows versions of GIMP for some time, has maintained an account on SourceForge to act as a distribution mirror. That is, he had until today, when he discovered he was locked out of the Gimp-Win account, and the project's ownership "byline" had been changed to "sf-editor1"—a SourceForge staff account. Additionally, the site now provided Gimp in an executable installer that has in-installer advertising enabled. Ars tested the downloader and found that it offered during the installation to bundle Norton anti-virus and myPCBackup.com remote backup services with GIMP—before downloading the installer authored by Simoni (his name still appears on the installer's splash screen).

I was curious, so I looked this up - 2013 birth rate numbers for India are 20.22 per 1,000. This translates to about 47 births per minute, using the old numbers.

Population (est): 1,236,344,631
Birth rate: 20.22 per 1,000 of the population.

So 1,236,344,631 / 1000 * 20.22 [24,998,888 yearly] / 365 [68,490 daily] / 24 [2,853 hourly] / 60 = 47.56 every minute.

If my math is wrong, I'm sure someone will point it out, but 1000 since Monday is rather conservative.

I downgraded (upgraded?) a month or so ago and now my Nexus 7 2012 is usable again. I tried resetting everything using lollipop and it was still utterly unusable.

I also monkeyed around with some certificates so that the updater stopped nagging me to install lollipop again. If anything google could make it easier to turn off the updates.

Then, ask them to do the exact same thing, except with an editor that has a different name (no, not just renamed, but something that looks at least slightly different, but uses the exact same mechanics for saving a file).

For kicks, the two separate programs should be Office 2003 and any Office version above 2007.

Holy crap! A phone that still has a replaceable battery!

This is definitely my next phone, my GS3 is starting to show its age.

I really don't give a rats ass about phones being super slim. I want a phone with a user replaceable battery, because they are only good for so many charges and the battery will have to be replaced. I'm already on my second battery in my GS3. Apple's solution of sending in your phone and getting a completely different refurb unit is crap, because you don't know what you are getting. I suppose the GS6 will be doing something similar.

I still say any device with a battery needs to be user serviceable. Of course the manufacturers don't want that because when the battery dies they want you to buy another device!
