There is a big problem with "shut up and calculate". We have an incomplete theory that so closely approximates reality, it's error term is attributed to experimental error.

The problem is that it is complex math that most physicists struggle with and so simply accept the dogma of its underlying theory. This has led to a tenacious view of reality that prevents anyone except "fringe science lunatics" from exploring the nature of space. It has become obvious that clinging to a Newtonian view of space is reminiscent of epicycles. Bohr and Newton provided us with excellent tools, but they did not give us a complete theory of everything. Until you cast off the shackles of Bohr and Newton, you will not know the nature of gravity or understand observations attributed to dark energy and matter that cannot be detected because they do not exist.

Both Bohr and Einstein had valid points. Einstein was correct in saying the universe is deterministic, but calculations would need to take into consideration the state of everything in the universe and this is obviously impossible. Bohr advocated a mathematical model based upon statistics that provides a practical tool that so closely approximates reality, it is often confused with absolute truth.

My 2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid went for 120k miles trouble free. Maintenance was affordable and while I'm hard on brakes and tires, I got 75k miles out of the brakes and almost 80k miles out of the tires. I got a fair price when I traded it in as well. The F series truck cannot be the best selling truck of all time for no good reason.

A long time ago, people said Ford stood for Fix Or Repaid Daily, or Found On Road Dead. Personally I think the future of Ford stands for things like:
Fully Optimized Robotic Drones
Fast online remote delivery.
Future of robotics development.
Full Onboard Robot Driver

If you work for a company like Ford, don't listen to these guys. Make great products that stand the test of time. We will continue to buy them.

The flaw in this argument is that american workers are dead weight - they are not. There are ample brilliant, well educated and ambitious americans who can be trained to do these kind of jobs.

The reality is that corporations don't have trouble finding employees, they have trouble finding employees willing to work for lower wage & benefits for a given job. Driven only by profit motive and short sighted business models they blame workers instead of investing in the long term through well developed training programs. That is their right until they take money from the government (i.e. the people). Hopefully those subsidies are invested in training programs.

We don't need to import Taiwanese to do jobs here, we need them to import americans to be trained over there if they want subsidies.

Of all countries I have visited, Japan exemplifies the benefits of a society where nearly all its members obey rules of social order. It is very refreshing to visit Japan. It is not surprising that they would be among the first to consider laws meant to contain the impact of AI on society.

AI was largely funded by major corporations with a profit motive to increase engagement. For the same reason TV news focuses on bad news (because it increases engagement), contemporary internet systems segment their users and give them more of what they want thereby driving tribalism ripe for the picking by frauds.

AI is not the problem. The problem is that AI is a tool that is being misused by charlatans. We do not need laws targeted to AI, we need to enforce the laws we have that to punish those that would defraud citizens. The principle of Freedom of Speech should not protect the freedom to lie, cheat and steal. The US FCC has abdicated its mandate and duty to protect the public from misuses of mass media.

We see constant headlines about better performance but only offer a foggy notion of what that means. We have a need for speed. Real world users aren't going to wait 15 to 60 seconds to get a response from a prompt even if it is a good answer. And if the current crop of AI really gains traction, quotas for GPU time will become a very real problem and time to response will stunt adoption of the technology.

It is not my purpose to convince you of anything, but it is difficult to not point out your incorrect assumptions.

>I don't want to know my battery is always letting me get less and less far every time I use it.
All machines degrade over time. Ice cars more than EVs because of their complexity and design. Your fixated on something that isn't an issue.

>And people always tell their experience with Tesla, but I would never pay that much for a car.
Then you likely have not properly calculated the total cost of ownership. After rebates, base Model 3 cars and those in their class are competitively priced and when you take into consideration the low maintenance and fuel cost they are cheaper. Everyone seems to forget the huge subsidies, heath and climate consequences of burning gasoline each of which dwarfs the cost of abandoning primitive technology.

>Telling me about your experience with Tesla is basically cherry picking because you know they are basically the best but you pay dearly for it.
I in fact don't think Tesla is the best. I prefer driving my Lincoln Corsair Plug In Hybrid over my Model 3 Performance Edition. I dislike everything on the center console screen. Everyone will have their own idea of what is best. If a gas car is better for you, go right ahead and drive one. As I stated in my original post, EVs aren't for everyone, but if EVs and Plug In Hybrids are mandated, not only will the world not end, it likely is the correct public policy.
