Comment Alternate currencies (Score 2) 180

I imagine there will be an influx of people working for currency substitutes - not gold or silver - but beer, tobacco, and contraband. It will mostly be prepaid credit cards at the start until the feds put some sort of controls on those. If you want someone to build you a back deck with no receipts (i.e. under the table), you might have to supply him/her with something of value with which they can quietly raise rent and grocery money.

Comment What gets taught in school ... (Score 1) 98

As a CPA in public practice, I see most small organizations using software that is taught in community college or the like. This makes it easy to find relatively inexpensive employees who know how to record most transactions.

I use GnuCash for my business, but sadly is not taught in school.

When I get financial information from clients - from whatever systems they use - I load it in to simple software I wrote twenty years ago and apply a series of journal entries to adjust their general ledger. I give them the list of entries, which they apply to their system and everything works fine.

I don't pay any accounting software fees.

Comment Some older motherboards may well fix this bug (Score 1) 43

I have a 7th gen chip plugging away in a FreeNAS box. The MB manufacturer (ASUS) has a beta BIOS upgrade to allow the MB to work nicely with Windows 11. I expect the final BIOS upgrade will incorporate a fix for this escalation. [In case you're interested - the MB is a B250 mining expert, which spent one year trying to mine before being repurposed.]

Comment Maths requirement (Score 2) 222

Computer science should not be offered to a student unless the student is concurrently (or previously) enrolled in maths.

The memory work required to succeed in maths should be an asset to future programmers.

The logical thought processes taught in maths are required to properly understand CS.

The fields should be separated in the same way as they are for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, ...

Why should CS be treated any differently?
