Right, tax credits only really mean you don't have to pay tax on the money you have given to charity. In Canada you get a credit of 15% for the first $200 you donate and 29% for everything above that. 29% is the highest tax rate. So if you are in that >$126,264 bracket you actually pay $28 tax more by donating x than if you where then making x less income. People who say "personal donations are just write offs" are clueless, unless of course the person is involved with the charity and is getting some sort of kickback. Oh and in Canada you are only eligible for a tax credit on 75% of your income. So if you were to donate 100% of your income the government still wants tax on that last 25%.

I wish I was making this mistake. The speedtest.net tests are in Mb not MB. Just checked again ... 1.01 Mbps down / 0.26 Mbps up from my 15/1 plan ... yes I went back up.

What is even more pathetic is thats likely even with their 'powerburst', which is supposed to "allow you a 20 second burst of download speed by temporarily increasing bandwidth"

I live in San Francisco, where Comcast advertises 8Mbps. We actually get 1Mbps down.

I have Shaw in Western Canada and its much of the same. I have a 15 Mbps speed, but I get speedtest results of around 2. Where it gets really corrupt is that when I downgraded to a 7.5 Mbps plan ... because I was only getting 2 ... my speedtest results were cut in half to just over 1 Mbps. Meaning their advertised rates aren't even their real upper limits. This should be criminal.

My dental is like that. I have coverage through work, but only 66%. Its actually cheaper for me just to pay cash than the remaining third, as the all the dentists charge insurance almost five times as much as an individual. The small company I work for is looking at dropping our company dental and just having us claim through accounting for anything under x dollars.

I've never understood why there is all this comparison to netbooks. The iPad isn't really competing with the netbook market at all. Its a new advice with a different target market and different feature set. All this comparison is like saying "A Dodge Caravan is go much better than a BMW Z4 Roadster. Its less than half the price, has three times as many seats, a built in cooler and a DVD player for the back seats. Why would anyone buy a Z4 when they could get a Caravan?"

I for one am very excited and plan to be an extremely early adopter.

I have often wondered about the legality of this. Mostly because I have a very large vinyl collection. The RIAA and MPAA are always saying that you have bought only a license, so if I own lets say Meddle by Pink Floyd, I download a copy off some ftp, get caught and it goes to trial. Can I make a defense that "I have a license here, check out the cover art"? Also my PVR from my crappy Cable company, Shaw, often forgets its a PVR and doesn't record what its set to do. Meaning I end up downloading them. Do I have a defense there?

Aslso I hate Blue-Ray disks with Digital Copies. They always end up costing $10 more than regular Blue-Ray disks and to give me something I don't want or have any use for.

Yes, because of the stupid laws imposed on mobile phones that force them to have a loud distinct noise when you call 911. You simply cannot call the police without alerting everyone in the area. I once tried to report a domestic when a huge guy was pushing around his tiny girlfriend after the bar, and almost got myself flattened for the effort.

Disney Releases 3D Texture Mapper Source Code 83

dsavi writes "Ptex, Walt Disney Animation Studio's cutting-edge 3D texture mapping library which was first used on nearly every surface in the 2008 animated feature Bolt, was released under the BSD license on Friday. Quoting the announcement on monophyl.com: 'We expect to follow Ptex with other open source projects that we hope the community will find beneficial. We will soon be launching a new Walt Disney Animation Studios Technology page under disneyanimation.com. It will include links to our open source projects as will as a library of recent publications.' This looks good for open source 3D graphics."
