Comment TikTok Is Fungible (Score 1) 112

The problem for TikTok and other similar services is that they are fungible and can be replaced by another service which does something similar. There's nothing earth shattering about the TikTok algorithms which suggest videos to watch. TikTok has a clever brand name . . . and that's about it. It's not fundamentally different from Vine, it just came along later when more people had smartphones.

Try going to "old.reddit.com" instead of of the www site. You're welcome.

The filter is The Carrington Event. A little research into the study of stars finds out that the Carrington Event is not an unusual event, but rather a regular part of stelar mechanics. There is evidence that possibly dozens of similar level events have occurred from our own sun during the history of humanity, only technology was at such a primitive state that there was no effect on society until the most recent event. These solar outbursts are on a semi-regular schedule, and most stars produce them from what I understand.

I don't have any mod points to mod you up, so I'll respond instead. I don't think people give enough though to how catastrophic any disruption like this would be on our societies. Take the U.S.A. and one state in particular, Texas. There is an undercurrent of secessionist rhetoric in Texas, but while the U.S.A. as a whole is food independent, Texas is not, i.e., it can't produce enough calories to sustain its population. I suspect that many economies evolve this way, so were a Carrington Event happen, it would disrupt the ability to transport calories and lead to large scale famine. Even in developed Western economies, hungry people are angry people, and widespread hungry people topple governments.

Comment Austin Sucks (Score 0) 228

Former Austin resident, and Austin has always sucked. First, It's a ribbon city that runs along two corridors, and only one (I-35) will get you anywhere. The traffic has always been horrible, and one stretch of I-35 has always been one of the most congested stretches of highway in the state, and it's also home to the most truck traffic in the state.

Second, it's expensive. The rental market has always been terrible because of UT, but most neighborhoods gentrified years ago. If you don't want to pay crazy prices, you spend so much time in the car. See number one.

Prices and commuting have literally destroyed the soul of the city from what it was 30 years ago. "Keep Austin Weird" doesn't work when there is no affordable places for anyone to live. There is no affordable housing for the people who make your latte.

Austin is still in Texas. If you want to find out what government dysfunction looks like, you can visit the legislature when it's in session. The next session will be 2025. Texas is a constitutional carry state, but you can skip security at the legislature if you have a concealed carry permit. Don't get me started on the power grid . . . .

Your AM/FM radio just starts when starting the car, and it requires minimal operation. And if you are driving locally, long ago you found a station which does not suck too much, and this station is forever playing in your car, making AM/FM a zero interaction facility, which is just there.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are much more hassle compared to that. You have too many things to set, to many playlists to choose from, to much fiddling and tuning until it actually runs. And for that, you have to be actually interested in what plays in your car, you have your attention diverted from actually driving your car, which is not a good thing to begin with.

If I am driving through places where my preferred stations are not available, I just switch the car entertainment off. No reason to invest brainpower into something which is just there to play over the car noises.

Or, the alternative is you could sink your car's stereo to your phone and have it start streaming without CarPlay or Android Auto. That's what I do.

There's a non-zero chance they will get hollowed out by the Cybertruck *if* Tesla manages to deliver a $50K 4x4 with 300 miles of range that (gasp) has seats that aren't cloth.
