Comment Re:try listening to FM radio (Score 1) 96

I do every Friday morning from 7 to 10. G101.3, a local radio station, has had a feature with the morning show with Rick Duncan for almost 20 years. It is called the "Free For All Friday" and they have more than just the "40 to 60" songs for sure. You can request anything as long as it is up tempo and they can find a clean version of it. They will play music from today all the way back, regardless of genre as long as they have it. For example, they will play music from Rob Zombie, Johnny Horton, Bobby Darrin, Bruno Mars, Metallica, Snoop Dogg, and many other artists too numerous to count. They even have an app in Apple's app store and Google's play store if you want to listen to it online.

From a report: "Oracle has lost a brilliant and beloved leader who personally touched the lives of so many of us during his decade at Oracle," Oracle chairman Larry Ellison wrote. "All of us will miss Mark's keen mind and rare ability to analyze, simplify, and solve problems quickly. Some of us will miss his friendship and mentorship. I will miss his kindness and sense of humor." Hurd announced a leave of absence from Oracle in September due to unspecified health reasons. Oracle stock had gone up about 37% since he and Safra Catz were appointed as CEOs in September 2014.

Major Broadcasters Sue TV Streaming Nonprofit Locast (variety.com) 90

Four major broadcast networks have filed a lawsuit against Locast, a New York-based nonprofit that streams local broadcast programming over the internet. From a report: In their lawsuit, ABC, CBS, NBC Universal and Fox allege that Locast violates their copyright by retransmitting their programming without permission, likening it to Aereo, the TV retransmission startup that shut down in 2014 as the result of a similar lawsuit. "Locast is simply Aereo 2.0, a business built on illegally using broadcaster content," the lawsuit reads in part. "While it pretends to be a public service without any commercial purpose, Locast's marketing and deep connections to AT&T and Dish make clear that it exists to serve its pay-tv patrons."

Locast responded to the lawsuit Wednesday morning with the following statement: "Locast is an independent, non-profit organization that provides a public service retransmitting free over-the-air broadcasts. Its activities are expressly permitted under the Copyright Act. The fact that no broadcasters have previously filed suit for more than a year and a half suggests that they recognize this. We look forward to defending the claims -- and the public's right to receive transmissions broadcast over the airwaves -- in the litigation."

They own a pretty significant chunk of the entertainment industry. And apparently will be taking over Hulu in a few years.

Netflix saved two shows that I cared about so far, Longmire and Lucifer.

If Netflix goes away I'm guessing there will be a huge surge in "other" ways to watch media, like torrents, and other methods.

That is unless the media giants continue to merge with the distribution giants such as Universal/Comcast. If that happens forget about torrents, especially with net neutrality gone as each studio will have its own ISP and streaming service. Such mergers could allow the media conglomerates to either block or throttle all external media that is in direct competition. Disney isn't a Monopoly in a traditional sense. They compete with other media groups so the anti-trust act will almost have no teeth.

Unfortunately this is the attitude that is quite common in America today. Homeless shelters are another example to this. The whole NIMBY crowd is pushing against a homeless shelter here in Richmond, Indiana. The attitude in of itself is anti-Christian when those that have it claim to be followers of Christ as it is hampering the efforts to help others with red tape. We are truly in the last days for sure.

Lawyer Sues Apple Over FaceTime Eavesdrop Bug, Says It Let Someone Record a Sworn Testimony (cnbc.com) 173

A lawyer in Houston has filed a lawsuit against Apple over a security vulnerability that let people eavesdrop on iPhones using FaceTime. "His lawsuit, filed Monday in Harris County, Texas, alleges that Apple 'failed to exercise reasonable care' and that Apple 'knew, or should have known, that its Product would cause unsolicited privacy breaches and eavesdropping,'" reports CNBC. "It alleged Apple did not adequately test its software and that Apple was 'aware there was a high probability at least some consumers would suffer harm.'" From the report: The suit says that Williams was "undergoing a private deposition with a client when this defective product breached allowed for the recording" of the conversation. Williams claimed this caused "sustained permanent and continuous injuries, pain and suffering and emotional trauma that will continue into the future" and that Williams "lost ability to earn a living and will continued to be so in the future." The lawsuit also says that iOS 12.1, the latest major release of the iPhone operating system, was defective and "unreasonable dangerous" and that Apple "failed to provide adequate warnings to avoid the substantial danger" posed by the security flaw. Williams is seeking compensatory and punitive damages as a result of the exploit.

Submission + - Disney Sues RedboxTo Block Them From Selling Digital Movie Download Codes (marketwatch.com)

phalse phace writes: About 1 month ago, Redbox started selling through their kiosks slips of paper with codes on them that lets the buyer download a digital copy of a Disney movie.

But Disney says that's a no-no and today sued Redbox in an attempt to stop the code sales.

According to Marketwatch: "Walt Disney Co. sued Redbox on Thursday in an attempt to stop the DVD rental company from selling digital copies of its movies.

Privately held Redbox last month began offering consumers codes they can use to download a digital copy of a Disney movie.

Redbox charges between $7.99 and $14.99 for slips of paper with the codes to download Disney films such as “Cars 3” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” That is less than those movies cost to buy and download from Apple Inc.’s iTunes Store.

Redbox is only offering digital copies of Disney movies because it doesn’t have a distribution arrangement with the studio and buys retail copies of its discs to rent to customers. Those retail DVDs come with digital download codes. Redbox receives special copies of DVDs and Blu-ray discs from other studios with which it has deals that don’t contain digital codes."

Samsung To Launch Refurbished Galaxy Note 7 in South Korea On July 7 (yonhapnews.co.kr) 60

South Korean news agency Yonhap reports: Samsung plans to release the refurbished edition of the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 smartphone next month, industry sources said Tuesday. According to the sources, Samsung will release the smartphone under the name the Galaxy Note FE, with a price tag below 700,000 won (US$616). Official sales are slated to start July 7. The South Korean tech giant suspended production and sales of the Galaxy Note 7 last year amid reports that some of the devices caught fire while charging. A probe revealed that the problems were due to the non-removable battery. Accordingly, the refurbished devices will have a smaller battery capacity than the originals, along with the latest software updates.
