Comment Bullets don't knock people down (Score 4, Informative) 369

This is stupid because a normal bullet doesn't even have the kinetic energy to knock over a person. That is all Hollywood make-believe.
There's a whole series of tests done on Mythbusters that debunked the concept.
So these bullets are going EVEN SLOWER than normal ones, and it's supposed to "knock down" a person?
Think about this: a typical 9mm round will be 115 grains or 124 grains in weight. One grain is 1/7000 of a pound. We're talking about a projectile going in the ballpark of 1000 fps that weighs only about 0.0177 pounds for the 124 grain bullet. There simply is no knock-down potential.

Now, on the other hand, if you are seriously injured by one of those projectiles, you'll probably fall over in pain. Or you might also just fall over dead.

Comment Fuck yeah, moonbase! (Score 1) 81

Why do we not have a moonbase yet, I want to know? I mean the Earth collectively.

Robert Heinlein provided much of the philosophical legwork for how to make it work: Don't worry about building large reinforced airtight structures above ground, but instead bore into the ground and/or use caves that can be sealed up and fortified.

i.e., live IN the moon not ON the moon

So first you send up rockets with tunnel-boring moon machines, then you build hatches over the holes, then you seal up the leaks in the tunnels, then you build whatever you want inside there, with a pressurized atmosphere.

Comment Radar Cancer (Score 1) 139

Working in a field where lots of microwave and other RF radiation are involved, I've had some RF Safety seminars that were enlightening.

Essentially, it's all about the power and proximity that determines the danger. First level of danger is being blinded or having your testicles ruined with non-ionizing radiation. Microwaves can blind you, so I assume radar can also since it's in some of the same RF bands. It's all about power and proximity, again.

The human eyeball has the right size and structure to be resonant with a number of RF frequencies, which leads to the blinding danger I mentioned. Similar size and relative shape of the testicles makes them similarly vulnerable. These parts are endangered first by the molecular-vibration increase that can lead to burns, but blindness and sterility can occur sooner than the pain of burning can be felt.

First thing to do is never stand close in front of a microwave transmitter dish, or a radar gun. They are definitely dangerous.

As for the danger of cancer from those varied non-ionizing radiation sources, it's not certain, but I won't be taking any chances knowing the other proven effects.

Comment No use for a tablet (Score 1) 328

I just don't want a tablet. I like my laptop just fine, and I can carry it almost anywhere a tablet would go.

I have a 4" screen Android phone, for anything I need to do mobile-wise when I don't carry/have the laptop.

Relative actually gave me a little 7" Android tablet, and I installed a couple of games on it and played a few minutes. Used it about 3-4 times over a year and haven't looked at it in months even.

The concept of storing 6TB on one hard drive just scares me after replacing so many dead drives. Hard drives go bad more often than any other part in general purpose computers.

Those 5 SMART stats match up exactly with what I habitually look at on the job monitoring lots of RAID arrays' drives. Those are the stats that tell you if the drive is going bad most often in my experience.
