Journal Journal: Linux 20 years from a hobby to world dominance 1

Today its 20 years ago that Linus Torvalds send a little message to a Minix diskussions group:

I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since April, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).

This is so stupid: if the rocks that had the water/ice in them came from outer space to form the planet Earth, then the water/ice came from rocks in outer space in the first place, then came from within Earth.

The water/ice still came from rocks in outer space whether they arrived before or after the initial formation of the planet.

Comment Why do people work in the first place? (Score 1) 306

People work to make money. They need money to put food on the table and to pay debts. That is their primary concern for working, not for completing a project. The project is just secondary to them. Therefore, it either gets done or it doesn't. Seeing as how the people of NYC have been healing since 2001, it isn't a surprise that they haven't put more time and effort into the work that they do, since they need the money to stay sane in order to work at all.

Submission + - Microsoft submits code to Linux Kernel

Gnea writes: On the heals of the recent thread that devolved into Alan Cox parting ways with a portion of the Linux Kernel Development Team, Microsoft is now trying to submit code to the Linux Kernel. 20,000 lines of code are being passed on via Greg Kroah-Hartman, who works for Novell in the SUSE Labs division as a kernel driver developer in order to enable Linux to work with Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization technology. Fortunately, Linus knows how to shrug his shoulders and deal with the situation rationally.

Submission + - Saddam Hussein FBI talks from 2004 revealed

Gnea writes: Yesterday, the National Security Archive finally released the final recounts of Saddam Hussein with the Federal Beurau of Investigations back in 2004. Quite a few secrets revealed there, including his fingerprints. 'FBI special agents carried out 20 formal interviews and at least 5 "casual conversations" with former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein after his capture by U.S. troops in December 2003, according to secret FBI reports released as the result of Freedom of Information Act requests by the National Security Archive...', but what's possibly most shocking was his final testament to his stance on the US, North Korea and Iran: 'Saddam denied any connections to the "zealot" Osama bin Laden, cited North Korea as his most likely ally in a crunch, and shared President George W. Bush's hostility towards the "fanatic" Iranian mullahs...' It's no wonder North Korea has been firing short-ranged missiles lately.

If a peace officer puts handcuffs on you, you're under arrest, period.

Not 100% true. A peace officer, if alone, can and will place the cuffs on someone in order to temporarily detain them in order to perform a warranted search. When the search is over, as long as nothing was found wrong with the search, the officer will likely remove the cuffs and let the person go.
