Comment Re:Oh, greaaat... (Score 1) 54

Yeah it seems MS is oblivious to the way their office suite is a set of platforms that whole businesses are built on. Trying to forget Access even exists, and trying to replace VBA with JS plugins that don't live in the documents and have to be hosted on out on the web, and on and on... it's pretty crazy. They eventually caved and will grudgingly support Win32 OneNote for a few more years. I expect Outlook will get the same treatment once everyone realizes how much they can't do in the new version.

I did not make that judgment... centuries of use with no racial connotations should be forming our collective judgement, as recorded in dictionaries, etc. I can't believe I have to explain this. The reason we can read each other's sentences is because we mostly agree on what the words mean. If any group, marginalized or not, gets to just decide words are off-limits on a free-association basis, then we will be in an eternal whack-a-mole game trying to get rid of today's new offense. No thanks.

Well, thanks for putting me in my place, I guess. Very inclusive of you.

Submission + - E-Ink badges used at Dutch hacker camp SHA2017 (sha2017.org)

TehStitch writes: Buying tickets for large hacker conferences not only means admission, it also means you're getting something unique that many desire: the badge. Those who are lucky enough to visit Dutch hacker camp SHA2017 will get a badge with several "firsts": an ESP32 and a grayscale E-Ink display. The first 4000 hackers buying a ticket are sure to get one on site.

From the article:
"If the ESP32 is the heart of the badge, the beautiful E-Ink display is definitely its soul. At 296x128 pixels, it will be easily readable at moderate distances and, a first, readable in sunlight! Officially it's a 1-bitmonochrome display, so black and white only, but our team already has a greyscale hack working which uses the nature of e-ink to our advantage."

Submission + - Unitary Software Patent challenged at the Belgian Constitutional Court (esoma.org)

zoobab writes: The Unitary Patent for Europe is being challenged at the Belgian Constitutional Court. One of the plaintiffs, Benjamin Henrion, is a fifteen-year campaigner against software patents in Europe. He says: "The Unitary Patent is the third major attempt to legalize software patents in Europe. The captive European Patent Court will become the Eastern District of Texas when it comes to software patent disputes in Europe. As happened in America, the concentration of power will force up legal costs, punish small European companies, and benefit large patent holders."

Submission + - EU Copyright Reform: Your input is needed! (copywrongs.eu)

An anonymous reader writes: The European Commission has finally (as of last month) opened its public consultation on copyright reform. This is the first time the general public can influence EU copyright policy since fifteen years back, and it is likely at least as much time will pass until next time. In order to help you fill out the (enlish-only, legalese-heavy) questionnaire, some friendly hackers spent some time during the 30c3 to put together a site to help you. Anyone, EU citizen or not, organisation or company, is invited to respond (deadline fifth of February). Pirate MEP Amelia Andersdotter has a more in-depth look at the consultation.

Yes, you may be right for your situation. I do not happen to have any system available with PCIe slots in it but would love to toy with a bunch of Parallella boards for a CPU-bound thing or two. So for me this is a more interesting option and I've backed their Kickstarter for that reason.

Military Personnel Weigh In On Being Taliban In Medal of Honor 171

SSDNINJA writes "This is a feature from gamrFeed that interviews nine US service members about playing as the Taliban in the upcoming Medal of Honor. One soldier states that games like MoH and Call of Duty are 'profiteering from war.' Another says, 'Honestly, I don't really see what the whole fuss is about. It's a game, and just like in Call of Duty, you don't really care about what side you're taking, just as long as you win. I don't think anyone cares if you're part of the Rangers or Spetznaz, as long as you win.' An excellent and interesting read."

Droid X Gets Rooted 97

An anonymous reader writes "The Droid X forums have posted a procedure to root the new Motorola Droid X, putting to rest Andoid fans' fears that they would never gain access to the device's secrets due to a reported eFuse that would brick the phone if certain boot files were tampered with. Rooting the phone is the first step in gaining complete control over the device."

ESA Releases Lutetia Flyby Images 48

The European Space Agency has released images from yesterday's close approach of asteroid 21 Lutetia by the Rosetta probe. At its closest, the probe was a mere 3,162 km from the asteroid, passing at 15 km/s and snapping photos sharp enough to make out features as small as 60 meters. "Rosetta operated a full suite of sensors at the encounter, including remote sensing and in-situ measurements. Some of the payload of its Philae lander were also switched on. Together they looked for evidence of a highly tenuous atmosphere, magnetic effects, and studied the surface composition as well as the asteroid’s density. ... The flyby marks the attainment of one of Rosetta's main scientific objectives. The spacecraft will now continue to a 2014 rendezvous with its primary target, comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It will then accompany the comet for months, from near the orbit of Jupiter down to its closest approach to the Sun. In November 2014, Rosetta will release Philae to land on the comet nucleus." There is also a replay of the media event webcast on the ESA's website.

Wine 1.2 Release Candidate Announced 165

An anonymous reader writes "After evolving over 15 years to get to 1.0, a mere 2 years later and Wine 1.2 is just about here. There have been many many improvements and plenty of new features added. Listing just a few (doing no justice to the complete change set): many new toolbar icons; support for alpha blending in image lists; much more complete shader assembler; support for Arabic font shaping and joining, and a number of fixes for video rendering; font anti-aliasing configuration through fontconfig; and improved handling of desktop link files. Win64 support is the milestone that marks this release. Please test your favorite applications for problems and regressions and let the Wine team know so fixes can be made before the final release. Find the release candidate here."

Submission + - EU-India treaty leaks with 3strikes provisions

zoobab writes: The draft agreement between Europe and India on Intellectual Property Rights has been leaked, and clearly mentions at its Article 34 the possibility for administrative tribunals, such as the ones currently being setup in France via the Hadopi, to shutdown internet access of suspected downloaders ("This article shall not affect the possibility for a court or administrative authority, in accordance with Parties' legal systems, of requiring the service provider to terminate or prevent an infringement"). The draft also contains provisions on ISPs liabilities. The European Commission is also pushing for ISPs liabilities for copyright infringements in the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement, which was criticised in the public hearing on ACTA on going beyond existing EU laws and the E-commerce directive.
