When the industrial revolution occurred there had been a trained labor shortage for thousands of years. As things were automated the amount of demand for trained (white collar and skilled trades) went up and companies were willing to train workers and support efforts by governments to upgrade skills.
We had laws established which ensured safe working conditions (which reduced productivity per worker) , prohibition of child and slave labor, establishment of the 40 hour work week, unionization of some industries and a progressive tax policy.
Because of the fear of communism and union activities the world economy boomed,
Now we have companies and oligarchs who wish to return us the serfdom that was prevalent in the middle ages.
We need shorter work weeks. Higher progressive taxes,
Penalties for keeping a person in a single contracting position as a way of avoiding liability and benefit costs. Even the government does this now and we should be ashamed of this practice.
