Submission + - TED 2013: Sitting Causes Cancer? (wired.com)

Copper Nikus writes: It was only a matter of time. First asbestos is found to cause cancer. Then smoking is found to cause cancer, followed by alcoholic beverages. Now, even sitting in a chair is believed to cause cancer. WTF?

According to a recent TED 2013 speech by Nilofer Merchant, sitting in a chair is at least as dangerous as smoking. Not only does spending an average of 9.3 hours a day sitting in a chair gives you a sore butt, it also is claimed to contribute 10 percent of the risk of breast and colon cancer, 6 percent of the risk of heart disease, and 7 percent of the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Ms. Merchant wants to encourage office workers to "walk and talk". Apparently well known celebrities such as Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and Jack Dorsey are/were big fans of the walk and talk concept.

Ironically, most of the spectators at TED 2013 were sitting down while she was giving her speech. Nevertheless many were enthusiastic about having a new excuse for standing around the water cooler "talking business".

Ms. Merchant is a corporate director and former Autodesk executive.

It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Kerry defends liberties, says Americans have "right to be stupid" (reuters.com) 1

PolygamousRanchKid writes: Secretary of State John Kerry offered a defense of freedom of speech, religion and thought in the United States on Tuesday telling German students that in America "you have a right to be stupid if you want to be."

"People have sometimes wondered about why our Supreme Court allows one group or another to march in a parade even though it's the most provocative thing in the world and they carry signs that are an insult to one group or another," he added. "The reason is, that's freedom, freedom of speech. In American you have a right to be stupid — if you want to be," he said, prompting laughter. "And you have a right to be disconnected to somebody else if you want to be. "And we tolerate it. We somehow make it through that. Now, I think that's a virtue. I think that's something worth fighting for," he added. "The important thing is to have the tolerance to say, you know, you can have a different point of view."

What would have been the outcome if the girl hadn't had that cute gun, or hadn't been trained to use it properly?

Your comment about "women and gays" makes it difficult to take seriously your more valid criticisms.

I will admit I wasn't trying to be serious with that comment. I am in fact 100% in favor of women and gays having as many guns as they want in whatever color they prefer, as long as they join the NRA ASAP and receive adequate training in their safe and proper use. Hitting a target with real guns is a lot harder than hollywood would like us to believe. The reason is that real guns have a lot of recoil, while hollywood guns do not. This video illustrates my point very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXfg5o1ZVq4

I doubt, but would be interested to see any research, that any changes to the colour of a gun would have much effect on their attractiveness to children.

Go to the toy section of any store and take close notice of the colors used by the toys and the toy packaging. I assure you there is plenty of reliable research behind those choices. I agree that guns need to be kept away from children reach regardless of color, except at the shooting range under close supervision and with proper training.

Regulating the color of firearms probably could pass constitutional muster, and it could immediately make it clear that a particular firearm was not legal. I think it would also have a huge impact on sales to the "macho" crowd. .

For some strange reason gun control people like to assume criminals obey the law. They are wrong. "If we make all guns illegal then criminals will have to get rid of them" the naive gun control folks think. In most places there are already laws that prohibit criminals from owning guns. Passing more of the same won't change anything.

Nothing would prevent criminals from paining their existing guns pink in order to make them look legit if they wish to do so. However, since most criminals carry their guns concealed, it really doesn't matter much to them what the gun color is.

There might be kids out there who get guns to look macho or cool, but for the vast majority of legal gun owners a gun is nothing more than the right tool for the right job. A gun serves the same purpose as an electric drill, which is to make small holes on different targets. The gun is better than the electric drill when the holes need to be made at some distance from the target. This is sometimes necessary, such as when you return home and find a stranger hidding in one of the rooms waiting to ambush you (happened to me once).

I think cops would look cute with pink firearms.

Then why not start a whitehouse petition asking for cops to wear pink uniforms too?

And "gang bangers" might just look silly

If gang bangers start teasing each other over their pink guns this will surely lead to even more gun violence.

Per TFA, the female fruit flies prefer laying their eggs on alcohol containing food when the killer female wasps are around, but prefer non-alcoholic food when there are no wasps or when only male wasps are around. They can even tell the difference between different species of wasp. That is smarter than some people I know, let me tell you.

Obviously you have no idea how vaccines work. Please do a google search on this subject and you will understand why feeling some sickness shortly after taking a vaccine is a sign the vaccine is doing its job.

One last thing, why do most doctors and nurses refuse to take the vaccine???

False. Most doctors and nurses do take the flu vaccine. Some do object but it is due to various reasons, including allergy to the vaccine and religious beliefs.

I had the flu shot this year and still got the flu a couple months later. However it was a mild case of flu, so I think the vaccine did some good. I go to the gym regularly several times a week and take exercise classes as well as use the exercise machines. In the exercise clases I am exposed to plenty of sweaty and less than sterile mats, dumbells, balance balls, etc, and we lay on the floors a lot. Perhaps it was unrealistic to think a vacine could completely protect me from that much exposure to germs.

Submission + - Flies Get Drunk in Order to Survive (arstechnica.com)

Copper Nikus writes: In yet another fascinating example of insects being smarter than we give them credit for, this arstechnica article describes how fruit flies are able to fight back against deadly wasps by using alcohol. From the article:

A study in today's issue of Science suggests fruit flies are capable of medicating not only themselves but their offspring as well. And their medication of choice? Alcohol. The threat for these flies is any of a number of small, parasitic wasps. These wasps lay eggs on the larva or pupa of the flies, and their offspring feed on the animal internally, often killing them in the process. (Flies have larval stages, during which we call them maggots, and pupate just as butterflies do before emerging in their adult form.) Once infected, there isn't much one of the larva can do to get rid of the parasite. Its one option: booze. Fruit flies, as their name implies, like to dine on fruit, especially during the larval stages. In many cases, that involves ingesting the alcohol that's produced by natural fermentation of rotting fruit (this can approach 20 percent alcohol content). Some species of flies have developed the ability to tolerate this alcohol as they chew through the fruit as maggots. But for most of the wasp species, even moderate levels of alcohol are toxic.

Submission + - Are Mosquitos Becoming More Intelligent? (bbc.co.uk) 1

Copper Nikus writes: An article at the BBC makes a shocking claim about mosquitoes. It appears some individual insects in the wild have developed the ability to ignore the very popular DEET repelent after a first exposure. Imagine what misery this will bring to the human race if this trait spreads to the general mosquito population through the process of evolution through natural selection (or through divine intervention if you happen to be a creationist).

This will drastically increase the number of women and gays who own guns. Do you really want your girlfriend or gayfriend to have a loaded pink gun during their monthly PMS time?

This will also make dangerous guns look like attractive toys to children. Why in the world would anybody want that?

Finally, this will create a huge black market for non-pink guns. If the gov can't keep controlled substances from the streets, what makes you think they can keep non-pink guns from the streets?
