Comment Thanks, Obama (Score 0) 250

Remember when the GQP fretted repeatedly about that scary Muslim Barack HUSSEIN Obama having an agenda to institute Sharia law across the nation should he be reelected? I remember those complaints quite vividly, and yet here we are thanks to Republican efforts to curtail women's rights and ban books most of these idiots probably never read. I'm trying to understand what you're saying here. Making up some versions here, we have Redis the software product being developed under FOSS up to and including version 42.0. Now Redis Ltd. comes along and says, "we're taking the product private". It sounds like you're saying that whether we're talking about all versions up to and including v42 can be taken out of the public domain and can't be used by the very people who made contributions to that FOSS codebase, making a FOSS fork impossible. Is that right? It seems like various FOSS licenses should be preventing this...

No company could possibly be stupid enough to suspend *all* features for misbehaving on the social-media side of things. Then again, it's Elon we're talking about here and X has been a litany of bad business choices so far. On the other hand, he's so beholden to the mighty dollar that maybe the fact that he gets money from your future transactions gets you a special level membership of "X looking the other way". Hard to say how this might play out.

Ironically, some GOP candidate is going to stand up and declare that this is probably a union problem, or that Hunter Biden was somehow involved, and that criminal prosecution of either union people or Hunter couple with slashing government oversight is the only way to fix an ailing manufacturer. Worst of all, he/she will say it unironically to please the raving lunatics that believe such nonsense.

This will apply largely to people living in rural areas, the very same people who keep voting the GOP into Congress. Yet another crystal clear example of people voting against their own interests. I'm sure the local AM radio personalities will spin it in a way to make it seem like evil Democrats did this.

Comment Re:The problem they're having (Score 1) 218

Actually this has been discussed in a number of different, respectable forums. I think it was The Economist magazine that talked about the government's futile attempts to effectively pay women to have children but there hasn't been much interest because both men and women are trapped in a workaholic culture, and women know that having children will only add to their existing burdens. There is also a cultural imperative for women to tend to their husband's aging parents, and again Japanese women are looking at the true cost of marriage and saying, "no thank you".

As for the workaholic culture, the government will need to start issuing some real mandates to employers if Japan is to save itself from itself. I knew people working for a subdivision of Toyota here in the USA where it was understood that NOBODY leaves before the boss does. If the boss was there working or playing tetris (who can tell for sure?) then it was a kind of shame to get up and leave. I can only imagine that it's at least as bad in Japan.

I read your entire post and thought you were perhaps a bit unhinged, but then you got to Andor and I realized, "God damn it, he's not wrong." Andor showed that you don't need lots of action or CGI scenes to make a great suspense-driven program. This series was grade-A film quality all the way through. Then we get mediocre (at best!) drivel in the form of Mandalorian, Boba Fett, She Hulk, Wanda Vision, etc. Andor has strong rewatch value, the rest of these do not.
