Comment Updater Has Been Mysteriously Pulled for Months (Score 2) 107

Well I guess this helps explain why both the latest “Display Audio Software Update” (ie the Carplay upgrade) AND the previous versions have all been yanked off their site since April. Been a pain in the butt not being able to access it after picking up a vehicle that while eligible for the Carplay upgrade it had never been installed on top of the vanilla Hyundai infotainment package. https://update.hyundai.com/US/...

Comment Lane use enforcement? (Score 1) 201

We have bike lanes. Cyclists do not use the bike lanes. They ride in the car lane. They ride on the bike lane stripe to prevent a car from passing without crossing into the "mandatory 3 ft distance" between car and cyclist. Even with an expensive and long multidirection bike lane setup for their use many still insist on riding in the street. My questions is can cyclists be fined or otherwise punished for NOT riding in a bike lane when one is provided?

Comment Do they take personal leave? (Score 1) 89

Seriously. Are they required to take personal leave when they "walk out"? If so do they request it ahead of time or submit a request afterwards? And is a company required to approve a leave request when an employee is blatantly working against the company while on the leave? Do they just get up from their desk and walk out? Are they on company property or further away on public property? To get around this I guess they could do it on their own time or break, but then it does not sound as much like a"walk out".

Submission + - Facebook Facial Recognition Gets Even Creepier

An anonymous reader writes: Facebook announced new facial recog settings for uploaded images:
https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2...
Naturally it is"opt out" not "opt in". Plus no way for a non-Facebook user to opt-out unless you sign up for Facebook first. You can be a face in the background of a photo taken at a restaurant and now your face is scanned along with any others in the photo just waiting for you to sign up and acknowledge it is your face.

Submission + - FDA Just Approved The First-Ever Gene Therapy For an Inherited Disease (sciencealert.com)

schwit1 writes: In a historic move, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved a pioneering gene therapy for a rare form of childhood blindness, the first such treatment cleared in the United States for an inherited disease.

The approval signals a new era for gene therapy, a field that struggled for decades to overcome devastating setbacks but now is pushing forward in an effort to develop treatments for haemophilia, sickle-cell anaemia, and an array of other genetic diseases.

Yet the products, should they reach patients, are likely to cost as much as US$1 million for both eyes.

Submission + - Facebook is giving the US government more and more data (qz.com) 2

schwit1 writes: Every year, Facebook gets tens of thousands of requests for data from governments worldwide, including search warrants, subpoenas, or calls to restrict certain kinds of content. According to a new report released by the company on Dec. 18, these requests are increasing.

In the US, the requests rose by 26% from the last six months of 2016 to the first six months of 2017, while globally, requests increased by about 21%. Since 2013, when the company first started providing data on government requests, the US number has been steadily rising—it has roughly tripled in a period of four years.

Submission + - Oumuamua Appears To Be Wrapped In An Organic Insulation Layer (theguardian.com)

dryriver writes: Oumuamua is the cigar shaped object — about 400m long and only 40m in the other dimensions — that originated from somewhere else in the Galaxy and visited our Solar system while moving at nearly 130,000 MPH. Scientists do not know where Oumuamua came from or what it is made of — it is not shaped like commonly seen asteroids, and unlike comets, it does not leave a trail behind it, not even when it flew past the Sun. Oumuamua seems to be wrapped in a strange organic coat made of carbon-rich gunk that it likely picked up on its long travels through space. The coat, which gives Oumuamua a dark red appearance according to scientists, was examined by using spectroscopy, which looks at the light being reflected from its surface and splits it down into its wavelengths. By looking at those measurements, scientists can work out what the object might be composed of. Scientists regard it as likely that Oumuamua may be of icy composition on the inside, but that the ice doesn't come off the object due to the thick organic crust that is wrapped around it. Oumuamua has also got extraterrestrials watchers excited. Some believe that its strange, long shape suggests that it is a spaceship of some sort passing through our Solar system. Whatever Oumuamua turns out to be, it certainly has researchers and space watchers around the world fascinated and puzzled at the same time.

Submission + - Chrome Will Start Blocking Ads On February 15

An anonymous reader writes: In June, Google revealed that Chrome will stop showing all ads (including those owned or served by Google) on websites that display non-compliant ads "starting in early 2018." Now the company has committed to a date: Chrome's built-in ad-blocker will start working on February 15, 2018. Interestingly, this date does not appear to be tied to a specific Chrome version. Chrome 64 is currently scheduled to arrive on January 23 and Chrome 65 is slated to launch on March 6, suggesting Google will be turning on its browser's ad blocker remotely, and possibly gradually for select users.

Comment Old fashioned but works... PHONE (Score 1) 327

I see no mention of whether the person has or does not have a landline or VOIP phone, but here is a possible solution: http://www.vtechphones.com/pro... It is a phone that can be programmed to have hotbuttons. Some of the buttons can even have pictures inserted behind the button so an ailing parent or small child can simply push a button and the phone then dials the corresponding number. That number can be 911, a parent, etc... It also has a panic button dongle that can be worn and used in case of emergency. Good luck. That is a tough situation.

Comment Active vs Passive "Distractions" (Score 1) 208

I think the whole driving while "distracted" issue boils down to the type of distraction. My two cents... ACTIVE A phone call is an active engagement. You talk. The other person then talks. You are expecting feedback, so part of your brain is tuning in to receive that potential incoming response, therefore causing some people to not focus on other activities (such as driving). Another example would be texting. You get a text. You actively look at it, then respond back. PASSIVE A horrible song comes on the radio. You slightly lean forward and turn a physical knob or physical button to change the channel. You are not expecting further input form the radio. You just want it off of what is on there now. Another example would be turning the heater on/off. You just lean over, grab a dial, and turn it down. You are not expecting feedback from the heater other than for it to get hotter/colder. No unexpected feedback. Another example would be eating a hamburger. You have the hamburger in one hand and driving with the other. No need to look down at the hamburger or listen to the hamburger, it just is passively being eaten. Talking to another person IN THE SAME CAR could also be seen as passive. You are not trying to dial someone. You are not trying to hit a button to respond. You are just opening your mouth and talking. Those same systems that allow you to talk are not tied up with hand-eye coordination of driving. To counter that, if you have two kids in the back seat and they are fighting causing you to look up into the mirror while you talk, then that would switch to active and not passive.
