Comment Get back to me when there's AR/VR Contacts (Score 1) 178

Big bulky headsets are not my idea of a fun time computing. I've already used VR headsets (and returned them... thanks return policies!) My outcomes with VR have been headaches, vertigo and other not fun side effects. I have glasses... but who doesn't?

Until we have something that can literally exist in a set of prescription lenses - completely unreasonable for today - it's just not worth it.

$3500-$5000++ desktop workstations using a gimmicky bulky headset is just not ready for the mainstream. You can certainly afford bullshit like this because it's in the realm of a beater car... but in a year or two whatever comes next will completely upstage it and require a new set of hardware, again.

So I say again, get me a pair of contact lenses that can do ar/vr using another system I own, wirelessly, without any hard connections. I can use some earbuds for audio. I can use whatever input methods I want.

Capitalism wins every time and printer manufacturers need to inject those ads to make you buy more ink and sign up for costly subscription programs that you forget to cancel.

I do agree anyone thinking that they will be able to drop printer manufacturer mandatory bloatware is delusional. If anything this will give them an excuse to sell you a new printer so they're all for it. They'll even give you a free X day trial for their ink program so long as you give them a bank account number! So generous.

Comment Database maintenance issues are now IT? (Score 4, Insightful) 67

Granted structure is different everywhere i've worked but where I am an applications team handles database maintenance. The IT infrastructure team makes sure the underlying infrastructure is working and that no problems are seen in terms of metrics from alerts but when you run maintenance disk utilization in a database can expand greatly over what it will be day to day e.g. the overwhelming majority of time.

Depending on what commands were run and what developers may be doing to an actual production DB (you'd be surprised how poor the controls are for things like this until it's a problem in a manufacturing company...) said commands could take up 1.5x typical storage, 2x typical storage, or 10x typical storage. So their 500GB database with a 2TB disk may not be enough.

This is greatly oversimplified and i'm just making up an example because we don't know what happened. I do know that i've seen poor data architecture everywhere i've ever worked from tiny companies up to multi-billion dollar businesses. Things that never have downtime because production is 24x7 like a manufacturing plant can have some of the worst tech debt of anywhere.

Comment Proprietary! Why doesn't Sony learn? (Score 1) 50

Does anyone remember what happened to the Vita because it had the reputation of having first party overpriced memory cards? I loved the handheld but they killed it on release with that one decision.

Now this handheld is a $200 accessory for the PS5 that cannot be used for any other use case. You can't use normal bluetooth headsets with it... you have to buy Playstation only accessories for the accessory. Here comes another flop!

They are so obsessed with locking people into their ecosystem it's bewildering. Why omit bluetooth when you already have a wireless module installed?
