Submission + - Slashdot Alum Samzenpus's Fractured Veil Hits Kickstarter

CmdrTaco writes: Long time Slashdot readers remember Samzenpus, who posted over 17,000 stories here, sadly crushing my record in the process! What you might NOT know is that he was frequently the Dungeon Master for D&D campaigns played by the original Slashdot crew, and for the last few years he has been applying these skills with fellow Slashdot editorial alum Chris DiBona to a Survival game called Fractured Veil. It's set in a post apocalyptic Hawaii with a huge world based on real map data to explore, as well as careful balance between PVP & PVE. I figured a lot of our old friends would love to help them meet their kickstarter goal and then help us build bases and murder monsters! The game is turning into something pretty great and I'm excited to see it in the wild!

Submission + - Stephen Fry Supports Campaign To Save Southampton Pub "The Hobbit" (metro.co.uk) 1

jIyajbe writes: "An online campaign to save a Southampton pub named The Hobbit from Hollywood legal action has gained the support of Stephen Fry.

Fry, who is among the cast for the big budget film adaptation of JRR Tolkien's precursor to The Lord of the Rings from which the pub took its name, said the threat of a lawsuit from California-based movie producer Saul Zaentz Company (SZC) was 'self-defeating bullying'.

Stella Roberts, 41, the landlady of The Hobbit pub, said 'The pub has been called The Hobbit for more than 20 years and it has never been a problem,' she told the Southern Daily Echo.

'I believe the decision to target us now was prompted by the release of the film.'

'We have been told that absolutely everything to do with the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit must go. We just haven't got the resources to fight it.'

Edward Wildman Group solicitors, acting for SZC in the UK, said its client would not be commenting on the case."

'The Hobbit' Pub Threatened With Lawsuit 388

An anonymous reader writes "'The Hobbit,' a small pub in Southampton, England, has been threatened with a lawsuit by lawyers representing the Saul Zaentz Company in California. The pub, which has traded under the name for the last 20 years without incident, now faces closure if it does not change its name. It's yet another example of big business throwing its weight around to get its way. The pub's landlady said simply, 'I can't fight Hollywood.'"

Submission + - Hollywood Bullys British Pub (stuff.co.nz)

Master Moose writes: British actor Stephen Fry says he is ''ashamed'' of the film industry following news a popular English pub called The Hobbit is being threatened with legal action.

Fry, who is in Wellington, New Zealand filming Sir Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, this morning tweeted: "Honestly, @savethehobbit, sometimes I'm ashamed of the business I'm in. What pointless, self-defeating bullying".

The popular Southampton music venue has traded with the name for more than 20 years, the Mail Online reported.

In all seriousness though that program is evil, I would be glad to see it lose market share by any measure, I never completely managed to remove it from an old desktop of mine (came pre-packaged) and that's despite removing all the program files, using their own uninstaller and purging the registries. I've since given the box away to a friend but I wiped all the drives before doing so and apparently it still comes up with popups occasionally.

Only if center is the Communist party.

By most of the worlds standards Obama is indeed right of centre, there are few if any American politicians who aren't. Ask anyone with a basic knowledge of Politics, from Europe, South America or Asia, hell even Canada and they'll give you the same answer. A lot of us also think your medical system is a complete disgrace.

CmdrTaco writes: "It's total navalgazing and I wouldn't post it if I was still working here, but I thought my heirs would be pleased to know that Slashdot got a mention in Neal Stephenson's Reamde. Be proud and keep up the fight. It's page 161 if you have the hardcover."
