Just as a point of reference, I drove to Iowa and back last week. On our way back I encountered 2 Teslas. One I followed from Ogalala to Brush Colorado which seemed pretty far from home for such a vehicle. There are fast chargers all along the way though, not at every exit, not that frequently but to drive from Boulder to Des Moines wouldn't be difficult in a Tesla which was sort of surprising to me. Walmart is installing fast chargers; what's the furthest you can be from a Walmart? I figured those long open stretches of red states would be off limits but it looks pretty doable, at least in eastern Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa. Wyoming looks a bit more risky on the maps. Really though, it just looks like you need a little more planning, for good or bad.
We've got kids and such, and the 9ish hours of drive time is about as long as we would really do, it took about a tank and a half of gas and I stopped 3 times, once just for nature, once for a splash and dash and once for fuel and we ate and walked around some. The third stop was right in line with a full charge at a super charger. The nature stop was a no-op; however if there was a charging station and I had a Tesla I might have added some power and maybe stayed for 20minutes and walked around some. The splash and dash would be difficult to replicate. So in that particular trip, maybe it takes 45 minutes longer in a Tesla, assuming you need a full charge somewhere. That being said, less noise would have been spectacular. The risk is if you get to a fast charger and it's in use, or there is a line, then you're really screwed for time. Save for serious marathon driving, a Tesla looks quite capable of doing what common families would need. If they do some clever city planning with the chargers, put them near parks, sit down restaurants, maybe near some local sites (you'd be surprised how many of these pass-through towns have some sort of museum or something I could see these long boring drives being even better and only taking incrementally longer. If we sort of re-imagine the truck stop and convenience store and make them somewhat more desirable places to spend 30 minutes....
