Submission + - Bitcoin breaks $100 USD per coin (examiner.com)

bobwrit writes: "Yesterday, while a number of banks were closed, bitcoin decided to break another major psychological barrier, and is now trading at above $100 USD per coin. At the moment, Bitcoin is trading at $118 USD/BTC. There is very little resistance to further price increases, so expect the price of bitcoin to rise very rapidly over the next few weeks. These are also record highs for the currency."

Submission + - Gender gap in tech salaries is all gone, Dice reports (infoworld.com)

bobwrit writes: "The field of IT is notorious for being persistently male-dominated, but that doesn't mean women still suffer from a gender gap when it comes to pay.

In fact, the compensation gender gap has disappeared for tech workers, according to the latest salary survey from IT careers site Dice. Specifically, ever since 2009, average salaries have been equivalent for male and female tech professionals, the company reported on Tuesday — as long as you're comparing equal levels of experience and education and parallel job titles."

Submission + - Apple loses UK tablet design appeal versus Samsung (bbc.co.uk)

bobwrit writes: From the article:
"A judge at the High Court in London had originally ruled in July that the look of Samsung's Galaxy Tab computers was not too similar to designs registered in connection with the iPad.

He said at the time that Samsung's devices were not as "cool" because they lacked Apple's "extreme simplicity".

Apple still needs to run ads saying Samsung had not infringed its rights."

Submission + - SpaceX rocket launch fizzles on pad (cnn.com)

bobwrit writes: "(CNN) — SpaceX aborted the historic launch of its Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station on Saturday at the last second because of a rocket engine glitch.

The launch would the first attempt to send a private spacecraft to the space station. SpaceX and NASA officials say the next launch attempts could come Tuesday or Wednesday in the early morning hours at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

As the countdown reached zero, the engines began firing — but then shut down, NASA and SpaceX officials said.

SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said "high chamber pressure" was detected in Engine 5 of the Falcon 9, the rocket to carry the Dragon spacecraft. She said technicians will inspect the engines later on Saturday and is looking forward to another takeoff soon."

Submission + - Initial reviews of the first fully customizably mouse come in (examiner.com) 1

bobwrit writes: Cyborg is a company well known for their gaming peripherals. It has a line of mice, xBox controllers, keyboards, and the like. The Cyborg R.A.T. 7(the original one) is one of the most comfortable mice you'll ever own, once you have it customized to your hand. It is also very, very precise, and it one of the nicest mice out there on the market currently. Click here to see pictures of the mice.

Let's start with the physical design first. The outside is matte black, with an option of changing the back piece that sits in the middle of your palm. The options for the back piece are: a shiny/rubbery piece, a long matte black piece and a short matte black piece. Overall, the device looks very mechanical and very modern looking. The matte black is a nice finish, because it doesn't show fingerprints/finger grease as much as a glossy one would. The underside is a thick aluminum plate, with a hole in it for the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel is a rubberized one, instead of a matte finish. The scroll wheel is then accented on the side by more aluminum. The one item that you think people would have an issue with, would be the section just to the right of the left mouse button. It seems like a lot of people would hit that accidentally with their fingers, but that doesn't happen all that much. The button area's are quite large, and make it difficult to miss them.

Submission + - Oracle might only receive $150,000 in damages from Google (zdnet.com)

bobwrit writes: Now, it looks like Oracle could end up with just $150,000 — if anything at all given that the threat of a mistrial looms and we’re still in the middle of the second phase of the trial covering patent infringement.

Judge William Alsup warned Oracle at the U.S. District Court of Northern California on Thursday morning that the “most” the plaintiff might end up with is statutory damages over the nine lines of code in the rangeCheck method — the only item on the verdict form during phase one of the trial in which the jury found Google’s conceded use was copyright infringement.

“The fact that they have nine lines out of many millions, you have no damage study tied in,” Alsup exclaimed to Oracle.

Although it is up to the jury to determine damages, the maximum limit for statutory damages is $150,000.

Apple says in the motion that Samsung destroyed "vast quantities of relevant evidence in blatant disregard of its duty to preserve all such evidence," according to Network World."
