Journal Chacham's Journal: Michigan State Constitution Amendment: Gambling 2
Got my sample ballot for my precinct (19c-27). Here's the the first of the two state proposals.
PROPOSAL: 04-1
A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO REQUIRE VOTER APPROVAL OF ANY FORM OF GAMBLING AUTHORIZED BY LAW AND CERTAIN NEW STATE LOTTERY GAMES
The proposed constitutional amendment would:
- Require voter approval of any form of gambling authorized by law after January 1, 2004.
- Require voter approval of any new state lottery games utilizing "table games", or "player operated mechanical or electronic devices" introduced after January 1, 2004.
- Provide that when voter approval is required, both statewide voter approval and voter approval in the city or township where gambling will take place must be obtained,
- Specify that the voter approval requirement does not apply to Indian tribal gaming or gambling in up to three casinos located in the City of Detroit.
Should this proposal be adopted?
I lke the idea of it. But it is backed by the current casinos and the government. Now i'm just plain confused.
UPDATE: Not sure about being backed by the government.

What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Except for fleecing the poor and making national lottery companies rich.
The effect is to take from the poor and give to the rich and the government. Like Robin Hood in reverse. And giving false hope to the poor that they'll strike it rich by throwing money away. Buying lottery tickets is one of the worst things you can do with your money, from an investment perspective. It's almost a guaranteed 100% loss. I think it's wrong for the government to prom

I have heard some pretty awful stories coming out of the casinos in Detroit, the number of suicides and bankruptcies, the occasional murder...
This proposal may have some kind of purpose which is to stop any threat to the closing of the casinos. I really have no idea though.
But you're right, it is curious.
