Journal Zirnike's Journal: Questions and Answers 19

This is a bit off... I don't mind succumbing to emotions, depending on what they are and where they're directed. I just don't allow emotions to affect my politics: politics involve too many people of too many views to make the mistake of allowing emotions to govern decisions. The only time emotions are reasonable to use as part of a decision process are when only you (or your direct relationships, i.e. friendships and significant others) are the only one involved. More people means more emotional types, and it means using emotions will leave someone being hurt. This is bad.

So, a few questions. First, I got no responses in my last journal. I thought it was fairly funny. Did I just post it at a bad time? Did no one read it? Guess I'm feeling a bit insecure.

Secondly, I'm having a strange problem with Firefox. I'm using 0.9.3 When I try to save a picture I want to save for... errr, future inspection, or if I try to save a file, it will peg to as close to 100% CPU utilization as possible for about 15-20 seconds. If it's a large file, when it completes, it does the same thing. Does anyone have any idea why it might be doing that, and/or what I can do to fix it?

  • Any number of reasons. Your last JE was on a Saturday, and I, personally, spend less time on the computer on weekends.

Another option is that no-one found anything that they felt impelled to comment on. (I have had that happen in my JE as well.) There isn't any way (that I know of) to determine how many people on your fans list have actually read it, so that's not a viable way to track it.

    I wouldn't sweat it.

    ^_^

  • What rh-k said about Saturdays. I often miss the JEs made on Saturday, because I often do not read /. on Saturdays. Good one, though. Wish I had known about the apple soda a week and a half ago (when I was moving my daughter in to BU).

I have the same issue with Firefox 0.9.3. Since there's now a 1.0 preview, I'm going to see if that fixes the problem.
    • Tell me if it helps... I'm not looking forward to upgrading, as I have a fair number of extentions installed and the upgrade kills them off.
      • Yeah, I've got 18 extensions installed at work, and a few more at home. First thing i'm going to try is saving images without all of the extensions installed.
      • I installed PR1.0 yesterday and all my extension upgraded except a few and I went to their homepages and manually downloaded the upgrade, so I have all mine now. I just lost 2 crappy themes I don't use anyway.
      • I think that this image saving issue has been fixed in 1.0. See my JE. My success with extension upgrades was poor; only about 1/3 of them had upgrades available on mozilla.org, and only three of those installed automatically.
        • No luck with my upgrade... still hanging on occasion.
          • I've been watching, and I have not seen it at all. Maybe it's related to one of the extensions that is disabled. The following extensions are disabled in my install: Firesomething, All-in-One Gestures, Copy URL +, GMail Compose, Duplicate Tab, deskCut, Bookmark Backup (and I have a *lot* of bookmarks), Jump Link, Open Long Url, Linky, and Add Bookmark Here. If I see the problem again, I will try and pin it down further.

I have 0.9.3 on all my machines (2@home and work) and have noticed similar flakiness when saving images. Sometimes it is fine, others it will take 10-20 seconds, even other times it will fire up the download manager and download the image again.

I'm still not convinced that 0.9.x is any better than 0.8 was. In fact, I think 0.8 was the better version. I just hope 1.0 is more stable than 0.
  • Yep, I'm lurking a little for today, but I wanted to say that I meant that as a compliment for one. I'm emotional a lot more than I should be and I admire your pure logic in discussions. I do think you could lighten up about relationships a bit; however, that's your choice! I get a HUGE kick out of reading a lot of your replies because of their intelligence, logic, and sometimes ridiculously funny ripostes.

I read your last JE, but I didn't have anything interesting to say (what's different than any othe
    • Oh, I know you meant it as a compliment. It's just one of those things I felt I should clarify before people think I'm doing a Spock impersonation or something.

As for relationships... It doesn't matter if I lighten up or not, I'm not going to get into one, so at least this way, I maintain my tenuous grasp on sanity.

Yeah, I know... I'm just feeling more insecure than usual, what with no job and all. That, and the only girls that will talk to me are already involved/mar

      • What the fuck are WE*?

Married, in a relationship, in a relationship, in a relationship, married, respectivly, assuming I'm paying attention correctly. :) Then in my personal life, we can add (aside from the obvious set, 'related') in a relationship, in a relationship, in a relationship, married, a

          • All right -- I see the problem.

I was reading your punctuation more like: involved, married, & committed lesbians. Which *none* of US girls here are... 'cept maybe for MsWillow, and I don't know if she reads & replies or not.

So it was all a matter of punctuation and my brain not working properly... AGAIN. :-)

    • I read your last JE, but I didn't have anything interesting to say (what's different than any other time you may ask), but I enjoyed it! A lot of times people don't reply to mine either, but they'll reference something they read in it later. I think some JEs are less conducive to replying than others. Try not to take it personal!

Yeah, I read it also & didn't have anything to say. I agree that some are less conducive to responding.

Zirnike, some journal entries are just asking to be ignored. If you put a

  • It was definately interesting. (I'm even thinking about looking up the sound of a laughing hyena.) But I really didn't have anything to contribute.

No need to feel insecure...you're set as my "Friend", and I receive updates when friends write in their journals. (And I read every single one. Even if it's a few days late.)
  • Hardly anyone ever replies in mine.
I even did a poll recently with very few replies.
